I've always likes Barqs with chocolate ice cream.

I'm not sure why you got downvoted, I've heard my girlfriend and her Cuban family refer to coke floats as "vaca negra" which means black cow.

Root beer floats and cream soda floats are my favorite
Seems like one of those things that could be pretty interesting if you played with the flavors--cherry soda + chocolate ice cream, Sunkist + vanilla, etc

Purple Cow - Vanilla ice cream with grape soda
Orange Cow - Vanilla ice cream with orange soda
I haven't had one in years.

I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but a root beer float from Culver's or made with Sprecher's Root Beer is incredible.

The best root beer I've had is the stuff the local breweries make. You can get a growler of it for less than the cost of regular beer, but more than you pay at the grocery store. To me, it's worth it...

There is an a and w place here in corpus. Occasionally I'll get a root beer float there.

LINK With the product in the post above if you just drop the ice cream in it, it is a float. If you stir/mix it together it becomes a shake. This is also much better than any float made with a coke/soda/pop.
No it is not a shake. It becomes a malt.
And I used to get shakes, malts or floats (root beer or coke - my mother always got 7-Up) at the Woolworth in Bon Marche Shopping Center.
Baskin Robbins does them and I do believe Sonic still does too. I might just go check later this evening.

Thanks for the back up.

My fiancé thought it would be a good idea mixing non-dairy ice cream and Diet Coke the other day since we're on our "wedding diets". I do not recommend trying this.

I recommend putting French vanilla ice cream into a glass of Vernor's.
Fantastic.
Fantastic.

Skip the float and that funky foam and blend root beer and ice cream to a shake consistency for the win. Frost Top call this a root beer freeze...

My Grannie used to serve me three scoops of ice cream in a tall glass filled to the top with chocolate milk. She served it with a straw and an ice tea spoon. I suppose it is a deconstructed shake, but I still make them to this day. They start off great and finish even better.

Sometimes I pour milk over my ice cream and it develops a sort of milk crust.

Right and I quote What? Stay off the drugs.
I'm clean but what my doc gives me, long story there. which can be anything I want. I chose the soft core stuff. To many in my family has taken the wrong path. Sad.

Then how in the hell can you not manage to find root beer in Knoxville. You can walk into any grocery store or gas station and find it.
Hell you can go into the grocery stores and sometimes find the old school Zatarain's root beer extract and make your own. Use to buy it at the Kroger and Ingle's in Farragut, but that was a few years ago.
