A 17-year-old boy and his dog were fatally shot by deputies early Thursday morning after the pit bull attacked a deputy in Palmdale, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. (KABC)
quote:
Deputies at the scene said they initially responded to a report of loud music at a party. As they were conducting an investigation, one of the deputies was allegedly bitten by a pit bull. The deputy was not seriously injured.
The dog was restrained by its owner, but as the investigation continued the animal got loose again and charged at the deputies, authorities said. The deputies then opened fire on the pit bull.
quote:
Amid the shooting, the dog's owner allegedly raced around a corner in an effort to apprehend the animal. The teen was struck at least once in the upper torso, the sheriff's department said.
He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name was not immediately released.

Cop should not shoot and get mauled?

You notice this never happens with any other dog.

Cop should be able to deal with the dog (whether shooting or otherwise) without shooting a fricking person

im not a fan or charging cops but if the cop killed a kid using the spray and pray method then he should face charges

This cop, I feel bad for.

Well at least he was able to live a few years pumped up because he owned a vicious dog. I'm sure he felt like a badass with that dog.
Oh well, whats next in the news?

Add an extra rung on the belt for a tranquilizer dart

Sounds like the cop was shooting the dog when the kid jumped into the line of fire to save the dog. Sucks for everyone involved, but calling the cop stupid is, well, stupid.

This take too long to be effective.
A 9 or a 40 tranquilizer dart work much more effective.

17 year old
3:47 in the morning
takes pitbull on a leash to a party
pitbull breaks free and attacks police
owner then shows up
eta Palmdale curfew regs:LINK
How early in this narrative do we insert the "what could possibly go wrong?" cliche?

Not much of an "attack" if he wasn't seriously injured. If a pit bull is actually attacking you aren't walking away without a nasty bite. Seems like the dog was playing/excited and the cop freaked out and shot because it was a "pit bull". Sad that a 17 year old is killed because some cop got trigger happy at a noise complaint.

The way I'm reading it is the kid restrained the dog, then it got away somehow and came running around he corner and the cop started shooting at it, kid came around the corner too and the cop shot the kid by accident.
As a trained proffesional you should have more situational awareness than to start shooting at an the dog as soon as it rounds the corner, he's got mace, pepper spray, a night stick, a taser. Any of those he could have used to slow the dog down.
Or if the dog was truly a threat to the officers life and the gun was necessary, in sorry but he should be able to shoot the animal without putting people in the area at risk, at a minimum the cop needs better training on how to use his weapon. Seems like he really needed better training on how to handle situations and makning quick decisions

How many shots did the cop fire? Shouldn't they be trained how to shoot a dog point blank without missing and having stray bullets fly around?
Other professionals such as lawyers, doctors, and CPAs are held liable when they screw up. Cops should be also when someone not attacking the cop gets shot. Not sure if they include the dog as an extension of the person though.
