What does this even mean and does it even make any difference?

It stuck in your mind, didn't it?

Sure, it has a super low rate of return on the number of times that it is said. Still, if it prevents or lessens an accident, most people are willing to make that trade off of hearing it incessantly

I usually say it to someone when the weather/driving conditions are shitty as a heads up to be aware of the situation.

Unless someone specifically tells me this, I only drive fast and take chances

Well if you crash now, it won't be my fault!

Drive safe.

It's just a way of people letting you that they care about your safety. Would you rather them tell you "I hope you wreck and die in a fiery crash "?

Anything that has historically been considered a courtesy should be completely wiped from the earth.

Since auto accidents are basically the most common way people under 40 are going to die, suggesting to people you care about to exercise caution before they hit the road makes sense to me.

I tell the sweet old lady who works for me that at least once a week when she's leaving work.
I guess I'm some kind of weirdo or something.

Every now and then we'll be on a trip and one of the kids drops a toy or a book or something so my wife unbuckles her seatbelt to reach back and get it or even climb in the back of the vehicle

Every time she says "don't wreck"

As though prior to her saying that I was going to get in a car accident

I say it and when I do I mean to obey traffic laws and drive to not be in a rush. Too many people drive whatever speed they need to make it on time.
