Friend of mine has a master in entomology and has been in the business for over 20 years.
Was talking with him about the recent thread on Brown Recluse bites and he just sent me this article on the misdiagnosis and actual range of this arachnid. Good info here

People worry about the dumbest shite. I am an avid outdoorsman and have never been bitten by a spider or snake, yet people are terrified of them. frick wasps and hornets tho

Those little frickers are notorious for hanging around in mailboxes if you don't check your mail often.
Had one say hello once on the back of an envelope as I was going thru mail on countertop on day.
Fast too when I tried to squish him.

I've worked in the ER 14 years and people come in all day, every day saying they have a "spider bite" when it's a damn boil/abscess

To a woman, and most men, every snake is a copper head and every spider is a brown recluse. Truth is, most individuals have never seen either.

Had a bad infestation in our laundry shed and wound up being bitten. The shed had dark paneling and shitty lighting. Painted it bright white and leave a
LED bar on... no more recluses in our clothes.
If you have recluses its because you in some way created the right environment for them. I'm outdoors every day and have never come across a recluse outside. I always see them in dark buildings/sheds.

In 2010 I was bitten by a spider in the leg and got cellulitis.
I was hospitalized for two nights and it was terrible.
My left leg is still a little swollen.
It was not a brown recluse but it was bad enough.

Black widows are abundant where I'm at in New Mexico. I see several a week around the house.

Some older, rural houses have a detached building where a washer and dryer are kept.

Yeah, I went in the garage the other day and got caught in a black widow web. Saw the red hourglass and everything. I noped the frick right out of there

And every water snake is a cottonmouth

We had a bad infestation a few years ago, I was killing them under the beds every evening. Those bastards love cardboard - so I have none in my house or garage.

Just yesterday morning there was a spider on the door at my office that looked almost exactly like a brown recluse. Got real close to my hand. I looked it up and this spider had an elongated abdomen so it was a false alarm. I really didn't need any coffee after that.

Rural home.. washer & dryer in same building as the well pump separate from the house. Very common here. Nice to have those noisy machines outside.
Lots of people call every snake or spider something dangerous due to a lack of knowledge. They assume all are dangerous as a defensive mechanism. I am not one of those people. I can tell the difference between a male/female brown recluse once they are adults.
Painting recluse prone buildings white on the inside is often enough to deter them but running a light also helps. Only way I know of to permanently get rid of them.

I had a neighbor who had an infestation of brown recluse spiders. Could not get rid of them and the Insurance company ended up paying for them to build a new house.
