Bird, Jordan, and Lebron. That's the top 3 without an ounce of doubt.

I want Bird in his prime if I need to win one game. Most of you have no true idea how good Bird was. He didn't have nearly the depth of teammates that Magic had nor the coaching that Magic and Jordan had. Bird is easily the most versatile basketball player ever rebounding, passing, dribbling, shooting, and 3pt shooting.

I want Jordan if I need one season or one playoff season

I'd probably take Lebron or Shaq if I had to build a franchise. Most people overlook strength and durability as key factors in determining greatness.

Russel was probably the closest to Jordan in terms of desire, hunger, killer mentality. No his numbers aren't what makes him great. It is all the things that numbers can't measure. Leadership, will to win, foundation of a defense. All at a time when his color worked against him. I mean he coached and played at the same time and won championships.

Translation: Russell was a good/great player on stacked teams in league largely devoid of talent.

Jordan, nothing can be said for him that isn't known. He did everything the right way. He answered all challenges and conquered all before him...

People act like Jordan took four scrubs from a men's rec league and single-handedly won those titles. Jordan won bupkis until Pippen, Grant, Cartwright, Paxton, et al arrived. Was Michael a great player? Of course. But this hagiography of him that he is magnitudes greater than any other player is laughable.
I've wondered what would have happened if 'Nique ended up on the Bulls and MJ languished on a terrible Hawks franchise. What would the prevailing wisdom be now?

You can replace "Jabbar" with LeBron in these sentences.

quote:

All time leader in points, unstoppable shot

All Time Leader in Points Rebuttal and Unstoppable Shot Rebuttal

You can make the same convoluted, arbitrary, "intangibles" argument for LeBron's legacy. He has lived up to, and in many ways surpassed, the monumental expectations heaped upon him since age 17. He has kept himself, and his image, almost completely clean and untarnished in the age of social media, where his nearly every move is carefully taped, broadcast to the world instantly, and then scrutinized in excruciating detail. He has used his image and his celebrity to contribute millions and millions of dollars to countless charities and causes. LeBron has been the leader of every single team he has been on, including multiple national gold medal-winning olympic teams. While Spoelstra was a good coach, it's been pretty clear than LeBron was/is basically playing the role of GM/Coach/Player on both of his Cavs stints. Whatever you mean by "foundation of a defense," LeBron is effing GREAT at defense- 5 time all defensive team, 1 time second team. He's also effing great at being a teammate. He brought CLEVELAND their first sports championship in 52 years. CLEVELAND. And how did he pull that off, you might ask? Oh, he only came back from down 3-1 to beat the GREATEST REGULAR SEASON TEAM OF ALL-TIME.

Your dumb arguments for both Jabbar and RUSSELL (Really dude? You can't even spell his name) are easily refutable.

Also, how old are you? I'm willing to bet middle-aged.

I'll get to your Jordan argument in another post.

Nope. Jordan never beat Bird's Celtics. He had to wait for all the real competition of the 1980s to age out of the NBA to win titles. LeBron is similar in that way, needed all his East competition to fall off to win.

LeBron James could retire today and be a sure-fire Top-5 player to ever play. As it stands, he has a few years of elite basketball left and likely ends his career as the second-best to ever play. Some may argue he's in that conversation now.

- Barring injury, he will end his career Top-10 in both points and assists, which is something no other player can claim. There is a very real chance he threatens the all-time record in points scored.

- Trails only Michael Jordan in PER.

- Has three NBA Championships.

- He has four MVP awards.

- 12 All-NBA selections is T-3rd all-time and he is on his way to holding that record, too.

Amazes me that some still cannot appreciate how incredible LeBron is. We are watching a player that is rapidly climbing toward the greatest to ever play.

Bill Russell is the most overrated player in NBA history, there I said it. It's true. Deal with it.

It's annoying that current players get constantly compared to the greatest in the history of the sport.

Have this talk once Lebron has retired.

I have never in my life heard anyone refer to him as "jabbar" lol. It took me a second to process that.

That would be like someone saying "Shaq O'neal"

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Yours just happens to be wrong in this case.

LeBron is a top 2 player of all time. Anyone who says other wise needs to take off their nostalgia glasses.

One of the reasons for his greatness-names of players that were denied championships because of him (P. Ewing, C. Barkley, K.Malone, J. Stockton, C. Drexler, S. O'Neal, K. Johnson, A. Mourning, R. Miller, G. Payton, S. Kempf, D. Wilkins) to just name a few. Once Jordan won his first, I don't think most ppl doubted who was going to win the championship every year. He never backed down, never shied away from competition. Oh, we are going to have a slam dunk competition. No problem, I will go battle what probably is considered the best dunker of all time and beat him (maybe a little home court advantage). Scoring leader every year, no problem. Defense, yeah just won defensive player of the year. He went through the toughest of the tough, Pistons, Celtics, Knicks, Pacers. He was the ultimate competitor, alpha male, winner.
