I guess our medical staff is on par with the rest of the league

Chronic hamstring issues (like Lattimore's) are a legit concern for medical staffs. Number one cause for missed time (across all sports).

He did play all last season without a problem so hopefully he'll be okay. But he was definitely worth the pick even with his history.

Patrick Peterson had some issues at LSU.
Pretty sure his problem was cramping and dehydration issues. Not the same thing but still manageable. We haven't had a corner I can remember finish a year without missing time for injuries. We should expect the same.

If we had a competent medical staff it would be no concern. But the staff sucks. We turn 3-6 week injuries into season long problems.

What does this mean? Not being pessimistic but I don't understand how a big time college had to "learn" how to monitor hamstrings especially since he had surgery on them right after high school.

Looking for something more specific, but they took to monitoring them in the 2016 camp. I heard they used some kind of analysis to help monitor them but don't recall what.

He redshirted, while his team won the national title. Sounds like they had a ton of talent, and eased him back without rushing and maybe ruining him.
His final year was without issue, so it seems like they did it conservatively, and correctly.
People just like to bitch and worry about things. Lattimore had a very gentle recovery from his hamstring issues (the total opposite of, say, Skip Bertman burning up his pitcher's arms in college baseball), and suddenly folks are fretting that he is a disaster.
Anzalone recovered from his serious injury to be a dominant player at Florida until he broke his forearm in a freakish manner, and he's also a waste. Newsflash- a broken forearm is a meaningless injury, it killed some time but people recover 100% from that. Heck, it probably gave him time to better rehab his old injuries more.
Kamara- his overall totals aren't good because he platooned with Hurd. He's fresh... but somebody will bitch about him not being able to carry the load, I'm sure.
Hendrickson- found a small school stud that might match the top choices; the guy MIGHT be even better when he isn't the clear focus of every opponent. But he's just a reach who didn't play top competition.

He better practice with an IV hooked to him. He's in La. now and it gets hot. If he could not stay hydrated in Ohio how will he do it here? I know they practice indoors, but it still gets hot.
They also need to look into any supplements he might be taking, such as Creatine. You get stronger and have more energy, but it dehydrates the body. People who use it pull muscles often.

I did. He was drafted 15 years ago. He missed 5 games in his second season, then played in all 16 games his final two seasons with the Saints with 58 and 70 receptions respectively.
Perhaps there has been some turnover or continuing education on the medical staff, or maybe even advances in athletic training and treatment options since then.

Any type of surgery is a cause for concern. Nothing wrong with asking. Hamstring surgery is usually 6-12 month recovery time which would explain the redshirting for his freshmen year.

We were discussing Patrick Peterson who had hydration issues.

Just make sure our number 1 pick doesn't take creatine and it'll all be gucci

Dear Diary,
This pick feels sketchy as hell. Hopefully by Week 4 or so he'll still be 100 percent and we'll be loving every minute of it. Had a nightmare last night that he didn't get out of camp.

6 out of 10.
If he has another hamstring issue within 2 years, it will go to a 9 of 10.

I mentioned this in another thread but it's interesting how different fan bases see things. My brother in law is a bears fan and he texted me to congratulate us on getting Lattimore. I said I liked the pick but kind of wanted Jonathan Allen. He said "the guy with arthritis in his shoulders? Why?!"
Posted on 4/30/17 at 10:21 pm to Laaz2750
Arthritic shoulders don't heal. Hamstrings do.
Your bro-in-law is right on this one.
My buddy at work was the same as you, but didn't know about his shoulders. He was like oh damn.
For a guy that takes a pounding on those shoulders for a living it most definitely will bother him and likely shorten his career a great deal. That's a big part of why he "fell". Most teams were scared to touch him.

I think in a lot of cases, it's relevant to acknowledge that someone "HAD" injuries, which they have overcome and don't seem to have lingering effects.
Lattimore seems like one of these cases.
Sure, there were early issues, but the missed game total is skewed. People are counting his freshman year, which is frankly ridiculous: Ohio State was loaded, they won the national title. He was injured coming in, and obviously not required to come back ASAP in order for the team to acheive it's goal. Could he have come back that season? Maybe, but Urban Meyer never felt the need to rush him (not like Saban burning Blue Gay's redshirt in the Title game); so he took it slow.
Anzalone seems to be getting the same knee-jerk reaction from the ranters. He did come back and play at a very high level, and the original issue didn't resurface. He broke his forearm. Maybe as a pro he'd play in a cast after a couple weeks, but it wasn't smart in college. He seemed to show the scouts what he could do, and that he had returned from the concerning injury, so he called it a day and got prepared for the NFL. He might be a steal if the scouts are right.
