Find a local roaster. Buy them freshly roasted.
This is more important than the brand.

Specialty store- central market, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's
What I do is just find a local coffee shop I like and they will sell you bulk beans.

I like your style. There is a roaster in Addison, TX I have had my eye on.

Congregation Coffee Gallup Blend (out of New Orleans) was great. It is meant as an espresso blend. I have an aeropress and used that with it. Coffee was incredible. That stuff will keep you wired, however.
Once i ran out, i got some Cafaciteaux Malawi blend and it is pretty damn good as well.

Orleans Coffee (used to be called Orleans Coffee Exchange) is the goat. They service most of the high end restaurants here, and they recently started putting it on the shelves at some Rouses.
I have been buying from them online for a few years now. They have a fantastic selection, and they roast and ship as you order it. Can't beat that.

This. Or go to a local coffee shop that roasts or has the date printed on their bag and buy them.
If you are stuck with the grocery store, I like Peets.

Go talk to them and try some stuff out. And get rid of your French Press and get a Chemex.

Do you like Cafe Brazil?
They have them all over DFW. Closest to you is most likely Coit and Bush next to central market
I buy their Bourbon Pecan.

I have seen these but never used one. Are they time consuming? or at least moreso than a french press?

Chemex uses a paper filter, so the resulting coffee is less muddy/cleaner tasting than french press. But to each his own--you should brew it the way you like. My personal preference is to use a stovetop moka pot; some object b/c they think it tastes "stewed".
Coffee geeks are as bad (worse?) than beer geeks, only highly caffeinated to go along w/their opinions. (No hops to mellow anyone out.)

Ethiopian coffee is the best origin. They're the OGs of the coffee world

Yeh a little more than a FP but you get a better tasting brew.

While I like a pour over fine, I prefer the mouth-feel/texture of French Press for exactly that reason. Takes all types

If you don't have a burr grinder that'll make the grounds evenly coarse you should have them grind it too. Nice big grounds and no dust makes for the best French pressed coffee.

Who do you like around Shreveport?
I've bought from Kern Has Coffee at the Farmers Market and liked his products. Have not tried his delivery service.
