RFK, you need to spend sometime reading history...broadly. Western Civ, American history, etc. Honest recommendation.

Oh really?

I am picturing the current state of US education and wondering the percentage of students who ever have Northern Ireland and then the subset of that small subset that would actually remember they heard it.

I knew there were issues with Ireland in the past, but I honestly thought they were now in the UK. Honest mistake.

It's not like I grew up in Boston. I know more about French culture than probably most Americans because I grew up in Louisiana.

Besides, why wouldn't you want to be in the UK? Seems like you would want that economic stability and backing of the world's second-greatest super power.

Somehow I doubt you know much about French history, either. For example, did you know that the Kings of England were French from 1066 to 1485? Did you know that one of these French Kings of England (John) conquered Ireland in the late 1100s?

If so, you would probably know that Ireland was almost continuously occupied by England for about 800 years. If you knew that, you probably wouldn't need to ask questions like:

Besides, why wouldn't you want to be in the UK?

Which is a very stupid question, frankly.

Northern Ireland just wanted religious tolerance from the oppressive Catholic Irish regime that treated Protestantism like a crime. The Catholics were bombing Protestant churches on the regular. Eventually with a little help from mother England, Northern Ireland gained their freedom from Southern Ireland

You would know this by having read any number of thousands of book, known anything about "the troubles", maybe watched the news or read a paper in the last 40-50 years. Or you could have learned it from watching any number of probably a 100 or more movies.

How could you not know?

That's the most twisted version of that story I've ever heard. The phrase "gained their freedom" makes it seem like they were a part of the Republic of Ireland. They weren't. But you already know that. Stop revising history, the first draft was good enough.

DAAAAYUUUMMMMM...

I would bet that the vast majority of Americans do not know this...and I would bet that 1/3 who have traveled to the Republic of Ireland do not realize it...
