When I later Wiki'd 'Ireland' I was shocked to see that 'Ireland' proper and its relationship with the UK is a point of contention...

WTF?

Never heard of the IRA?

Dear God

and people wonder why the world hates "arrogant American cowboys".

Smug? She was probably trying hard to be civil, because you offended the hell out of her, and clearly just didn't know any better. Do you have any idea just how much animosity is built up between the Irish and UK?

Next time you're back in the States, try walking up to some protester after their march. If they're BLM, try telling them you think Southern rednecks have a nice culture to be proud of; if they're Rednecks try telling them you think the BLM marches are a wonderful thing.

See if their reaction is "smug".

She then immediately said 'oh yes, that's where they had the storm...George W Bush didn't do anything about that, did he?"

She's badly misinformed for a reporter.

IMHO, her ignorance about H. Katrina and Bush is lots more dangerous than some college-indoctrinated rube's knowledge about Ireland's history.

The reporter's ignorance and refusal to learn anything new about an event that happened in 2005 make her NOT a reporter, but, a Propagandist whose job it is to spread propaganda.

She is a LOT more dangerous than the OP.

I wouldn't call her "dangerous"...

let's review her angle, from what is stated here.

Irish, in Italy, reporting for a financial (not political) publication.

Her remark was not about her native country, nor the country she's currently in. It was not about an event in her field (like, say, stocks etc). It wasn't about a current event, or something within the last ten years. Depending on her age, it very well was in reference to something that happened before she was even adult.

It was in response to another's comments, which were blindingly uninformed, and very likely offensive to her.

To her credit she seemed to actually recall Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans from a decade ago, and she also knew of the devastation, and apparently the delays and frustration involved in the recovery. Everyone criticized FEMA, which is the federal government's response, and she knew the correct president for that period.

(quick now, how many people can recall details of other hurricanes, or typhoons, or tsunamis in other countries? What did their countries do? Was the response considered timely and effective?)
For example, I THINK Japan has had some disaster or other, it's a hugely important financial powerhouse internationally, and I have no idea who was in charge or what they did. This doesn't make me "dangerous", does it?

How did I go 36 hours without seeing this beauty of a thread

Who travels internationally and doesn't know about Northern Ireland, or the troubles generally?

Her smugness was probably due to her realization that you are a dumbass.

Besides, why wouldn't you want to be in the UK? Seems like you would want that economic stability and backing of the world's second-greatest super power
