The handicappers general in the Department of Justice strike again: the University of California, Berkeley, is deleting a massive amount of free, online content in order to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Berkeley previously housed an online library consisting of more than 20,000 videos of lectures. These videos were free and accessible to the public. But they are free no longer: next week, administrators will withdraw access to anyone who isn't a Berkeley student or professor. Why? Because the federal government left them no other choice.

Two employees of Gallaudet University—a school for the deaf in Washington, D.C.—filed a complaint with DOJ alleging that Berkeley's online content was inaccessible to the hearing-disabled community. After looking into the matter, DOJ determined that Berkeley had indeed violated the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to Inside Higher Ed. Berkeley had two choices: spend a fortune adding closed captioning to the videos, or remove them from public view. Cost-conscious administrators chose the latter option.

Deaf people make up 0.38% of the population. As is
typical in our modern society, 99.62% of folks suffer to appease 0.38%.

ADA is the best "feel good" legislation that has led to simply terrible results in reality

This is ridiculous. So free and readily available sources of education is going to be removed because the videos don't have closed captioning.

Eta: I no understand subject-verb agreement.

And these are the same people that demand more government in our lives. They would rather starve the world of valuable information than offend a fraction of the population.

Using that "logic", the entire internet should be taken down. Since it's not really accessible to blind people.

Don't they have computer programs that do closed captions?

It doesn't help the deaf people either. They could at least watch the videos before even if they couldn't hear them. Now, no one can. Great law, great interpretation, great results.

I do quite a bit of ADA work for employers and companies.

My two favorites:

Due to the ADA, small event center in a small town's "downtown" area has to build a ramp from the sidewalk to the main door. The problem? The sidewalk itself has no ramp and is about 24 inches higher than the road. No one in a wheelchair could come close to getting up on that sidewalk.

Small antique store remodels, has to put in braille signs for the bathrooms. Store was open five years, never had a blind customer and could have easily had an employee direct someone blind to the restroom.

The worse thing La. did was give fire marshal's ADA compliance responsibilities. Need building clearance from the fire marshal? You better comply with the ADA.

Is Berkeley also required to provide a sign language interpreter for every physical class for that has a deaf person enrolled? If not this seems like selective application of the law which should be tossed out.

That is extremely selfish on their part. Why do you want to hinder another person's learning and progress just because you have a disability? I know it isn't fair that some were born that way or may have had an accident later on, but you shouldn't want to hold everyone else back because of it. Very selfish

I felt a little bad changing the upvotes from the glorious 69 to a mundane 70.

thank you liberal idiots for one more act of "helping" people by suing over BS like this and hurting everyone over 0.0000001% who had an issue with something.

but then its Berkley so most likely all the videos were filled with anti America and anti common sense propaganda so......
