Spinoff from the worst movie thread - there are plenty of awful movies. This isn't a "worst movies" thread, as that answer is likely a shite movie you didn't expect to be good. What are some movies that you had high hopes for, or thought would be good, and it blew you away with how terrible it was.
For me, it's Suicide Squad easily. I had been so pumped for all the Super Hero movies around that time (BvS, X-Men Apocalpyse, and this). They all got terrible reviews, but I liked X-Men and I didn't think BvS was THAT bad. So I still had high hopes for Suicide Squad, which I had always been most hopeful for.
Suicide Squad was the first superhero movie I ever couldn't finish, and first general movie in a long time. I couldn't make it through. Jumbled mess of a plot, no character development. It was so bizarre and uninteresting.
I have no idea how they messed this up so badly, it was a slam dunk concept. I understand some people liked it, I'm not bashing those people as I enjoyed other comic movies that others hated.
Other disappointing movies that come to mind are:
Dinner with Schmucks - I love Carrell and Rudd so I thought it would be hilarious

Easy. The Phantom Menace.
I tried to go in with no expectations, but after 25 years since ROTJ, that proved impossible.

No Country for Old Men
I'm sure ill get a billion downvotes but it tried to hard. Plot was slow. It just didn't live up to the hype when I saw it.

I was so young when I saw it the first time (2nd grade) that I loved it

Because I watched it last night but,
Bridge of Spies was not very compelling considering that its a Spielberg/ Hanks film.

Prometheus...The trailer looked awesome and it had so much potential. Didn't think it was a horrible movie, just kinda meh. I was very disappointed with it.

Independence Day 2 was pretty disappointing.

For me it was Anonymous, hands down.
As an English teacher who loves Shakespeare, I was excited to see the authorship debate finally addressed on film. I talked about the film in class all the time.
Looking back, there was no way this film was going to meet the expectations I had, but my God, what a steaming pile of crap it was. Not only was the theory in the film far more absurd than believing in the traditional Shakespeare, it managed to turn one of history's finest monarchs into a simple-minded whore.
I'm still pissed about it.

Even as a small child, I was disappointed with Masters of the Universe. That movie should have been so much better.

Was true at the time - THEN I stupidly watched Send in the Clones - and it was even more disappointing.
(ROTWAPWCTBDVBIIFN was a slight uptick, so still terrible, but not as disappointing.)
And, of course, "Star Trek" (2009).
