Looking to build a 1.5-2.5 acre pond at my ranch. Good soil with red clay. Any idea on what this should run?

Call NRCS. If you are eligible for their program they may take care of most if not all of the cost. Basically it's for them in the event they need it to fight a wildfire in the area, and need the water.

I'd edit title to include, Paging NASCAR Fan.
Wait, nevermind.

Need to contact NASCAR. He is the OB pond guru.

Man, he will never live that down. As soon as I saw the thread title I wondered how long until NASCAR Fan would be thrown under the bus.

You may want to look up NASCARFAN. He built a model-scale version to help people understand how ponds work.

Def. recommend getting a crust survey done before you start. Last thing you wanna do is dig and build the pond and it not hold water. Have seen it many times over the year. You local Ag outreach can do it.

Do not look at if from the point of building a pond.
It is I want to sell dirt.

Chicken, you gonna have a severe case of the dissapoints! But, I'd bet a dollar you'd let out a chuckle..

I am currently getting quotes for this in South LA. They are all pretty similar. 2,500/day. That's to dig, spread soil or haul away. Typically .5acre per day. That's assuming you have good subsurface clay to cap and retain water.

As said above, I don't know how it works but you can sell dirt. Unless you need it elsewhere on your land? If you just want a hole and dirt removed, look into selling it. Why not have someone pay to dig a hole for you. Then once you have a hole, you could pay someone to make it a pond. Would seem like the most financially prudent method.

We are having a contractor come and dig test holes in a few weeks. I am really just curious as to the overall cost. I don't know whether to expect 10k or 40

We had a pond repaired last summer. The dam was leaking and we decided to expand it a bit. The contractor had done work for me before and does a great job. He cleared the trees and brush from the dam with an excavator. He recored the whole length of the dam...approximately 400 ft. While the water was low he installed a wier that will raise the water level about 3 feet. i had 3 pieces of equipment here including a D5, excavator, and a big Deere tractor with a dirt pan.
All total including some Dozer work in the woods was 6450. It was money well spent.
