What age should a child be handed a cell phone?

I keep seeing kids younger and younger with phones. My wife and I agreed that our kids won't have their first phone until they are 16 and have their own job to pay for it. I think phones are a bad idea for kids.

Check back in when your kids are 13 and every other kid already has a phone and let us know how your stance is holding up.

Kid needs a cellphone around 11 or 12. After school activities and summer league travels etc. 6th or 7th grade is the appropriate age. It doesn't have to be a 700.00 + device.

Let me know how that works out for you.
Both of my kids were given cell phones when their activities after school required me to rely on other people getting them home. I wanted to know where they were and if they were getting to the places they needed to go.
For my kids that was around 6th-7th grade.

It's not a question of age, it's a question of necessity

When they can buy alcohol.

13 seems reasonable...A lot of after school activities start around then, making real friends

My boys (11 & 9) both have "phones" . They are old iphone 4's the wife and I had in a drawer. They have no cell service, so they are basically used to play angry birds or whatever shitty app like Minecraft they have on them. They can play on it for an hour a day.....or use that time for the Xbox (really don't want my kids to be weird arse gamers) If we're going to be out an about they'll take the phones since they won't be around the Xbox. We usually get some looks from people who think the kids have phones.

Daughter just got one for her 13th birthday. She was pretty much the last kid in the 7th grade to have one. As others have said, it is the activities after school that finally necessitated it. She paid for half of it though since she wanted a $250 phone instead of taking an older free phone.

About to purchase my oldest daughter a phone and service ... she's 11 and about to be in sixth grade.
The youngest, 8, will receive one as well ... probably too young but with the service plan specials that are happening right now, she won't cost us any additional money except a phone.

I'll probably give mine a phone in 8th grade. Feel like thats around the age where kids start getting dropped off at the movies/mall and don't have parents with them at all times...although it'll be my old phone and not brand new. When she can buy her own phone is when she can have newest model

You're kids will hate you. And they'll probably still get a hold of a phone. You just won't know about it.
