why can't American car companies compete on reliability

simple question. with all the resources in the greatest nation on earth, why can't we compete with other major car producing nations in terms of reliability (excluding the british)? i mean, cant our car manufacturers not afford to pay for the best engineers on the planet?
The 8 most reliable car brands according to Consumer Reports
The only American car company is Buick, and Buick is basically engineered by Opel.
and dont come off with "this list is crap cuz Lexus and Infiniti sucks lolz." this is the 2016 rankings not 1994.

Unions.
ETA: They also sell a lot more vehicles here than they do oversees, so they're bound to have more instances of vehicles breaking down. Ford's European vehicles are pretty well regarded.

Maybe enough of the American public is brainwashed into 'buy American' that they don't have to be as reliable?
Maybe not. Just a theory.

Aren't Toyota and Lexus the same damn thing?
If Buick makes the list, why not Chevrolet? Again, same company.

buicks are German engineered (rebranded Opels). not the same car as Chevrolet at all.

How else can you explain why someone would buy a Chevy Impala over a Honda Accord? Or a Dodge Dart over a Corolla or Civic? Or a Chevy Traverse over a Pilot? God damn, I could go on forever. The Big 3 make some truly awful vehicles.
My dad is like that, but he's 75 and "doesn't like what the Japanese did to our boys in WWII."

But what about those chevy commercials that say chevy is number 1 in JD Power (whoever the frick he is) reliability for like, a million years in a row. Apparently ole JD and Consumer Reports are using different standards.

The list is car "brands." Toyota and Lexus are different brands as are Buick and Chevrolet.

Inb4 they manufacture some cars that were on that list.

based on information gathered from the publication's subscribers who have "owned or leased over half a million vehicles, from model years 2000 to 2016, with a smattering of 2017s, covering more than 300 models."
In total, 29 brands were ranked in the survey. Consumer Reports categorized the top eight brands as "more reliable" while brands ranked nine through 18 were classified as "reliable." The 11 brands at the bottom of the rankings were categorized as "less reliable."
Sounds like an unquestionable study to me...

True for the cars. The SUVs are re-branded GMs. Not sure about that new SUV Buick just released though.

As someone who drives rental cars every week, Buick's are most definitely rebranded Chevy's. Your point still stands, though.

It's management culture. What is considered an "acceptable defect" is very different in the company cultures of some of the more popular import brands than the American brands. They simply refuse to tolerate defects to the same extent we do.

Audi got their shite together in the last 5-10 years

Ditto. Very surprised Audi is that high.
American car companies aren't on these lists, in part, because they choose not to be. I'm guessing they've done their research and have determined that they're just as profitable taking a slight brand hit up front and will make it up on the parts replacement on the back end.

how many of those car companies are being investigated or facing huge fines for fraud to Americans?
Or have in past few years?
And Consumer Reports is hardly an unbiased opinion.
Have bought Jeep/Dodge products for 20 years, not one single issue with any of them.
