Is the commute from the Northshore to the Southshore that bad?

I am currently living in New Orleans, and I am really looking for a change. I really like Madisonville, but I would have to commute five days a week. I have friends that do it and they complain a good bit about it. I was trying to find some honest opinions to see if your decision was worth it.

A shitty commute to/from work can make even a good job miserable. Keep that in mind.

My wife has been doing it for 11yrs... the benefits of the quality of life on the north shore outweigh the negatives of the commute at least for her.

I worked in NORCO for 8 years and commuted to bascially downtown Covington and I didn't think it was that bad. If there was a negative about it, I would say its the 190 Traffic in Mandeville after you get off the Causeway. Other than that, NOLA traffic isn't that bad.

I know someone who lives in Covington and his office is in the CBD.

And he loves the commute. But he is an attorney that almost daily has to talk to people in NYC. He leaves his house at 8 AM, gets on his phone to NYC, and has a billable hour on the way.

In the evenings, he leaves his office about 6, and almost daily confers with a major client in San Francisco, and makes another billable hour on the way to the Northshore.

I did it for 5 years but was heading south to north. Wasn't bad at all. Seems a lot worse the other way.

I commute five days a week from the Madisonville area to the CBD. The drive is really not that bad, and outside of fog days the worst part is always I-10 between the CBD and Causeway (both morning and night). Wrecks/breakdowns on the bridge are usually moved pretty quick.

Live in New Orleans and commute to Mandeville to work. It's all the rage these days.

The commute sucks man. Once you live on this side, you will realize very quickly how much you don't want to cross that bridge. It is certainly doable, but it is not fun.

I did it for one year after I moved here and quickly decided how bad I needed a job on the northshore. That was seven years ago and I haven't looked back. It was the best job I'd had at that in my career up to that point. I had a head hunter call me last week asking if I was interested in a gig across the lake. I told him it would have to be 50k more a year for me to consider the commute now.

If there's a wreck on Causeway or weather / fog restrictions, get ready for a fun drive. If I ever moved to northshore while still having to commute to southshore, I'd go to Slidell to at least have alternate routes available if one bridge had issues

Wait till a day when we have the next tropical storm esque spring shower and you won't be able to cross the bridge.

I did the mandeville to Nola drive every day from 95 to 05
now I drive Hammond to BR every day since 05
you get used to it IF your job is fulfilling and you love where you live

I could have stayed in Nola and avoided the commute but I wanted land
I could live in BR but BR sucks

everybody has different motives and goals

Depends on where you work too. I'm looking at a company in Metarie, if I make it in I'll be looking in Mandeville.

Grew up on the Northshore. From Mandeville to Metarie, is 30 minutes door to door. Not all bad for not having to live on the Southshore.

Plus 4-10s, nough said.

It makes a big difference what time you have to be at work or if there is flexibility.

Living in Madisonville and driving to work in Metairie for 8 or 9a takes me about 1 hr and 15 min.

I used to live in Mandeville and had to be at work at 7a. That only took 35-40 min!

Makes a big difference at the end of the day, calculating trips both ways. 2 1/2 hrs (3 hrs with fog) vs 1 hr 15ish.

Come check out Bay St Louis. I commuted Old 90 and it's beautiful. 50 minutes if you book it.
