Didn't they just take over an existing site and let it stay up for two weeks so they could catch the people that were using it ?

Interesting argument.
Hilarious when cops do stupid stuff like this and it backfires on them.

The fact that the legal system has not deamed this sort of police work "entrapment" is disgusting. I made a post on this same subject as well. I want to either see these types of sentences commuted or have the director of the FBI and everyone who works this department arrested and sentenced as child pornography distributors.

They have taken over at least 23 dark web sites and transferred them to being hosted at a government facility.
So our tax dollars are being spent to run servers performing disgusting illegal activities so that people could be caught using them.

Prostitution stings don't harm anyone. It is an undercover cop as a hooker or a John, then they arrest people.
These children are not undercover cops, we should not allow the police to take advantage of children who have already been hurt in order to catch pederasts.
Once we do that, we are not much better than the scum we are trying to catch.

why is possession of child porn illegal and not just production of it?
same reason as possessing illegal drugs

what if your child was on that site? You're not realizing how big of a deal that is.

harm has already been done and now the FBI is using it to catch the sickos that are the reason the site exists

The kids had already been victimized. The FBI didn't create the stuff. They used it to catch sickos then shut it down.
No, every second these children are on the internet they are still being victimized.

Then why did the FBI take it down after 2 weeks? Why not leave it up there forever?

So how about posting these parts of the article?
That's a little different than setting up a child porn website, which is what the defense is trying to imply.
Here is the sleaze that is trying to blame the government for him getting caught.
This kind of sums it up for me.
quote:
In February, the FBI obtained a search warrant from a federal judge in Virginia that allowed the agency to run Playpen for up to 30 days on a government-controlled server.
Agents hacked into the computers of people who logged into Playpen and accessed its content. Agents were not authorized to rummage through a computer's files or search other content, court records said.

quote:
Pawlak, 39, created a Playpen account in September 2014 and accessed the website more than 300 times, prosecutors said. In less than a second, agents knew what computer the Burleson man was using. That led to the two child pornography charges against him.
"Thereafter, Pawlak's interest in child pornography continued due to a perceived element of danger or excitement," Hoxie said in a court filing. "He preferred to view child pornography depicting girls that were between 7 and 11 years old."
The FBI found hundreds of child pornography images from his current and former work computers, records said. Pawlak is charged with receipt and possession of child pornography.
"Pawlak sought out child pornography, including images depicting young girls the same age as his own daughter being raped and sexually humiliated by grown men," Hoxie wrote for the government.
This kind of sums it up for me.
quote:
"The FBI took quick action to locate otherwise anonymous child predators and received the blessing of two federal judges to conduct the short-term, monitored operation that was authorized by a warrant," Assistant U.S. Attorney Jamie L. Hoxie said in court records filed in Pawlak's case.
During the operation, numerous users were identified, leading to child pornography charges against about 180 people nationwide, including those producing images, court records show. At least 49 children were rescued from abuse, authorities said.
"The reality the FBI faced was that taking down the Playpen site, without catching its thousands of users, would not stop the child-pornography problem," Hoxie wrote in a court filing.

Posted on 1/23/17 at 8:17 am to Topwater Trout
Then why did they stop?
I want to catch all the pedophilea too, but not by leaving naked pictures of children on the internet.

they were only allowed a certain amount of time to do so by 2 federal judges.

they arrested 180 sickos...harm had already been done to the children. At least some good came out of their sting.

What? Are you opposed to all criminal investigations where officers pose as people they are not?
how can you solicit a minor online when there is no minor?
an undercover cop buying illegal drugs still involves an actual illegal transaction because actual drugs were distributed. even a prostitution sting involves an actual solicitation of sex for money from an actual person offering it

its not like the FBI was promoting child pornography

This is crazy if only because who knows if they'll be able to figure out everyone else a person may have shared these images with before the arrest is made. They more than likely won't be able to, so they're going to have people distributing child porn to others people who won't be caught. It's completely stupid and insane. They're literally spreading even more child porn around to catch a few people.
exactly
