I'm pretty sure I read about some Scandinavian country doing this.

at least this is better than when they create stings to trap online pedos and there is no actual victim b/c the person talking with the pedo is a grown adult

I think the FBI is distrusting child porn, which they are consequently arresting people for.

There is zero chance I could sit and look at child porn at all, much less as my job. I question the integrity and intent of the officers assigned to this task and I cannot understand how it is not entrapment. There are many other Constitutional means of catching them than to host child porn.

Well, then how could they make a case stick if it's not child porn?

Oh man, I forgot all about that.

Now I recall that SCOTUS ruling that virtual child porn is protected free speech. It does not involve an actual victim.

I don't think you can call this entrapment because that would mean the pedos weren't going to commit a crime and were tricked into doing it. The pedos were going to look for the porm anyway but found the FBI instead. I could be wrong though.

What the FBI actually did in this case is they used a warrant to seize the server hosting The Playpen site and used the software — referred to as a “Network Investigative Tool,” or NIT — to obtain identifying information from people who logged into it.

They basically used the existing website as a confidential informant to lead them to individuals guilty of heinous criminal activity.

Just as with many criminal investigations, they don't immediately shut down all criminal activity once they get in. They infiltrate and observe.

I do not have a problem with this.

Good explanation. I don't have an issue with this

Yep, I totally forgot that case.

Virtual child porn is considered more like a painting or drawing. It's not a real person.

It's not as if the FBI created the kiddie porn/web site.

They took over one so they could shut it down. Why not take a few sickos down with it?

What? Are you opposed to all criminal investigations where officers pose as people they are not?

If you value the apprehension of child pornographers, you have to follow the trafficking of these images. Care to identify the better method of capturing them and the likely success rate of that method?

This is crazy if only because who knows if they'll be able to figure out everyone else a person may have shared these images with before the arrest is made. They more than likely won't be able to, so they're going to have people distributing child porn to others people who won't be caught. It's completely stupid and insane. They're literally spreading even more child porn around to catch a few people.
