The FBI ran a child porn site to catch predators, and now the accused are crying

When Daryl Glenn Pawlak logged into a large child pornography website and downloaded images using his work computer, he was charged with receipt and possession of child pornography.
The operator of the website that was exploiting children, however, was not arrested.
That’s because it was the FBI. And federal prosecutors are defending the agency’s decision to secretly hijack and peddle child porn for two weeks as part of a sting operation.
During that time, tens of thousands of images of child pornography were uploaded to the site.
"Not only was the government the largest distributor of child pornography ... it was also the largest exploiter of children," Pawlak’s attorney said in a court filing. "This conduct is the essence of outrageousness, and a serious need for deterrence exists."
The case has ignited debate among legal scholars and defense attorneys about internet privacy and the FBI's decision to keep such a website up and running while more children were harmed.

I don't know how I feel about this situation. These sick predators need to be caught but I don't think the FBI should be distributing child porn while children are still in harms way. Thoughts?

This is up there with prostitution stings. Cops provoking crime rather than doing the legwork themselves.

Prostitution stings don't involve kids.

I don't want the FBI arranging homicides so they can catch potential murderers. They should not be doing this and the fact that the government thinks this is ok is ludicrous.

I wonder if the parents of these kids gave the FBI permission to use nude pictures of their kids for a sting operation.

You break the law and the law will break you.

His fricking work computer?? This guy was begging to get caught

The only part that bothers me is how sometimes a false/blind link or some sort of ad/virus hijack could link your computer to something you had no idea about.
Otherwise it's hard to feel sorry for anyone actively, willingly and obviously searching for things like that. Even though the FBI shouldn't be hypocritical with methods.

Nor do they involve victims, unless you count the arrested a victim of the police.
I am a staunch supporter of the police but shite like this is what makes the public question them. How is tempting people to commit a crime just so you can arrest them legal?

Cops should stick to eating doughnuts and leave child porn to the real professionals.

This is worse than that. Prostitution itself never occurs, it's just the solicitation that does. Here, the FBI actively engages in the crime of sexual exploitation of a minor by distributing the files to unknown third-parties. That would be like a prostitution sting where the john actually has sex with the prostitute and then is arrested.

The government is creating situations for the law to be broken and exploiting children in the process. This is awful.

I think it was a brilliant plan.

No one is going to jail for clicking a blind porn link or accidentally clicking on child porn on something like /b/
