Applewhite's deal with Houston

5 years at $1.35M per year. That's not the mark of a program who is serious about their hire. If they are offering guys like Miles or Kiffin that small (compared to their past incomes) salary and coupling that with a high buyout, then those guys would be smart not to go.
Houston said they didn't want a coach who was going to be gone in 2-3 years, yet they go out and hire a coach they'll possibly be firing in that time any way.

also, the buyout:

I don't think LSU fans have any room to talk about them settling.

That would have been a cut in pay for Kiffin. Damn.

Applewhite should get a big jump in salary after one year based on his performance or he would be always on the looking for a better payout job.

i think kiff's pay would have been substantially bigger than just 1.35.
in the end, UH gave it to the guy that they could get for cheap and someone they knew actually wanted to be there.
god damn that sounds familiar.

If true, Applewhite should get a big jump in salary after one year based on his performance or he would be always on the looking for a better payout job and UH would be always a stepping stone to a bigger program.

So if Major kills it and someone comes calling for him after 2 years then the buyout is $4M? After 3 years the buyout would be $2.7M?
That's not enough to scare anyone who really wants him away from going to get him, and it is against everything they've said throughout this process.
I think the big booster being involved so heavily caused a cluster.

Yes, but he does win for the most "Texas" coach name ever.
He just needs to hire Colt McCoy as his QB coach and maybe Jordan Shipley as his WR coach to complete the most Texan themed coaching staff in NCAA football.

It's fricking Houston
Paid about as much for their coach this year as LSU will next year.

have you ever heard of contract restructuring? Once he proves himself, and he will, it will be higher. Since he has never been a head coach before, what do you want them to pay him???

But the difference is that LSU paying their head coach less leads to them being able to hire the top coordinators in the country. Where as in Houston your coordinators are going to be extremely unproven coaches who Applewhite will have to take a chance on.

Applewhite got the job because he presented O's killer binder during the interview, accepting low salary to save money to hire elite OC and DC.

A) just because his starting salary is low doesn't mean they will be firing him shortly. If he preforms well, then they will bump his pay
B) why on earth would you think they would offer Kiffin or Miles the same. Those guys would never have even interviewed if that was the offer and agents get an idea of what they are willing to pay before hand.

this is a terrible hire. UH settled. If I were a Houston fan, I'd be pretty upset.

They wanted in the Big 12 badly. That didn't happen so this is it for them.

Ok since you are a gump I will let you slide because it is obvious it is difficult for you to put mind in gear before mouth in gear "or in this case fingers typing." They didn't have to pay up for Applewhite just like LSU didn't have to pay up for Orgeron. Why you say? Because there was no one else beating down their doors with HC job offers and they really wanted the jobs they were in the running for, so they didn't any leverage. Both Miles and Kiffin would have cost Houston much more than Applewhite
