So they are paying their new coach that salary just weeks after saying they won't lose Herman "because of money"?

It wouldn't be so bad if Joe Alleva wasn't so super impressed by the binder that he abandoned negotiations with the hottest available coach in the country to hire his D Line coach with a 10-25 record as head coach.

Herman and Applewhite are not on the same level.

Why would the coach at Houston make more than that? I'm surprised they can afford that.

schools will not pay the "sexton" money to those that do not deserve it - or will not accept the buy out clauses
that was the case with both jimbo & herman
O was the best option - as the others wanted 4-5 mil just coming in unproven

UH gave it to the guy that they could get for cheap and someone they knew actually wanted to be there.

god damn that sounds familiar.

3.5 million isn't cheap and not much less than Elmer Fudd was receiving. I don't think Alleva settled. Herman and Fisher weren't available and all of the remaining suspects were suspect.
O may be a misstep but he can recruit as well as MIles and he will be an improvement on the field.

You are correct. That isn't cheap for us, but it makes him the 7th highest paid Head Coach in the SEC West. Let's not act like it isn't cheap for the circumstances.

You are reading this wrong. You have to weigh the overall offering. Major was accessible for far less money and agreed to buyout, thus giving UH the feeling that he could continue to make the program and team do well. Clearly Kiffin and Miles either wanted more than it was estimated they were worth, or would not relent to a large buyout.

UH was looking for the best hire that would not be a risk to move away after 1 or 2 years.

Applewhite was that hire.

They did the right thing.

I think it's a good choice and fit for Houston and for one I think he will do well there. I'm a Major Applewhite fan from way back so I'm pulling for him.

Yes. It reminds me of this scary story my dad once told me where LSU was offering $5-6 million to one coach and then ending up settling for another coach for $3.5 million.

Houston said they didn't want a coach who was going to be gone in 2-3 years

When you are Houston and you are in the ACC you are always going to lose your coach every 2-3 years. If they are good, better programs will take them and if they are bad, you will be firing them. No one in America views Houston as their destination job, including Major Applewhite. If 3 million a year can't keep your coach, nothing will. Even the most loyal of loyal people, Chris Petersen, eventually left Boise for greener pastures. You can't win a national title at an AAC or MWC school. Period.

So if Major kills it and someone comes calling for him after 2 years then the buyout is $4M? After 3 years the buyout would be $2.7M?

That's not enough to scare anyone who really wants him away from going to get him

Exactly. That's a small buyout for a big program to pay. And they always negotiate it down.

Well they certainly got a coach nobody else is going to want to take from them.

A marginal OC with no head coaching experience. 1.35 million looks like overpaying to me.

Applewhite's deal with Houston by bamasgot13
5 years at $1.35M per year. That's not the mark of a program who is serious about their hire.

Neither is 5 years at around $3.5m per

What are they supposed to pay Applewhite? They think he was the best coach they could get, so they paid him market price; and if it doesn't work they can get out of it relatively cheaply. If it does work, I believe he has a major buyout.

Ok since you are a gump I will let you slide because it is obvious it is difficult for you to put mind in gear before mouth in gear "or in this case fingers typing." They didn't have to pay up for Applewhite just like LSU didn't have to pay up for Orgeron. Why you say? Because there was no one else beating down their doors with HC job offers and they really wanted the jobs they were in the running for, so they didn't any leverage. Both Miles and Kiffin would have cost Houston much more than Applewhite

Then it sounds like LSU paid more than double to O that they could've. Y'all could've spent that money on teachers and books.
