That sucks. I'm waiting to hear news about the old structures along Roaring Fork. They are right in the middle of the worst of it, so my gut is telling me that they are probably gone, too.

Yeah, that's really sad there.

that seems like a bit of an exaggeration...

You think?

I remember staying at the Park Vista on youth trips the week after Christmas years ago. Back then I think it might have been a marriott? And as a kid, staying at Zoders motel And then taking my family there a few times. It looks to be OK, thankfully, at least according to it's facebook page.

Just a sad situation.

it take for the forest to recover? As in, how long before it looks like it's "supposed to look" if that makes sense?

burns are great for the forrest. It will come back in the spring, and prosper better than ever. It is all the structures that cant be replaced. Like all the old houses and churches that have been there hundreds of years built by the settlers there. All those that were on roaring fork and in the park are the things that cant be replaced. If someone did set these fires i hope they find out who, and set them on fire

I talked to people in Knoxville this morning that said it was bad, but not that bad.

This is not true. The Lodge is being protected at this time from what I have heard. Fires are close but it hasn't burned

That was scary. If you stay, you die. If the car stalls you die.

GSMNP said Lodge is fine they are protecting it and it's privately managed so there will be resources available to save it.

Roaring Fork church is gone with most of the structures. In laws have a condo at Tree Tops. Still waiting on news if it. Reports are they will not be allowed into that area for 1-3 days.

What is sad is people left to go to dinner last night and fires kept them from going back to get their pets and or got separated from family members.

National Park will report on lost structures sometime today

The forest will be booming in the spring. The SE naturally has a wild fire season in the late spring, but we suppress it. Because of that, times like this are extreme. The native plants will excel the next few years. There are many species that rely on the fires for survival.

This is sad to hear. Been to Gatlinburg once about a couple of weeks after the 9/11 attacks. Was heading there from Nashville and ran into construction so we got off and passed through Alcoa and took the Scenic Route. Stayed at the Zoder's Inn just walking distance to the aquarium. We didn't get to stay long though due to a family illness. Would like to go back.

Prayers to all involved.
