I know it is a cheesy place but I love Gatlinburg. I hope they're spared the worst.

What's new in the Gatlinburg wildfire disaster

Seven people are dead. Alice Hagler, missing from Chalet Village, a collection of rental cabins, was one of three found dead in that neighborhood, her son confirmed. Authorities have not released the names of the others.
More than 700 structures were damaged or completely destroyed in the Gatlinburg area. That number includes around 300 buildings inside Gatlinburg's city limits and 400 in other parts of Sevier County.
More than 14,500 people were displaced as they evacuated from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and more than 2,000 were taken to emergency shelters.
The Dollywood Foundation will donate $1,000 a month for six months to Sevier County families who lost their homes in the wildfires, the organization announced on Wednesday night.
Authorities believe the disaster began when 80 mph winds whipped up a then-500-acre blaze near the Chimney Tops in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Downed power lines and embers carried miles away by winds caused numerous new fires, which spread rapidly and unpredictably.
The Chimney Tops fire now covers 15,653 acres and is only 10 percent contained. Nine crews, 22 engines, seven helicopters, four bulldozers and 285 total personnel are currently being employed to fight the inferno.

Authorities have determined the Chimney Tops fire was human-caused.
It is still under investigation.
Eight new fires erupted Tuesday into Wednesday.

Meteorologists estimate Gatlinburg received less than 2 inches of rain on Tuesday, while some parts of Sevier County received more than 3 inches. The rain has helped firefighters where it has penetrated leaf cover, but it has also created new challenges such as rockslides and mudslides. More rain is not forecast until Sunday.

High winds today, but the rain starting later tonight should help a good bit.

We just left there on Thanksgiving Day that is crazy.

Yeah hopefully all these Appalachian fires are knocked out by this rain event. Talk about rain coming just at the right time...

Was just there a couple weeks ago and you could smell the fires every morning. Driving home through Kodak there were times where you couldn't see more than 100 yards in front of you.

Pretty wicked if you go to the precip map, you can see the smoke showing up as rain.

We left the day before. Stayed last saturday through wednesday. No sign of smoke or fire, was a great trip. Really dodged a bullet here, praying for Gatlinburg and the GSMNP.

So... Wonder how western north Carolina is doing today? We were supposed to be there now and opted out due to the fires. They wouldn't reschedule or give us a refund even though my son and I are in the highly sensitive population, pregnant and small child. We came to TN instead, but are quite far from gatlinburg. The wind has been crazy today.

Some heavy rainfall should be there soon. Unfortunately high winds will come first.

Literally the smokey mountains tonight....

We are the recipients of the winds right now. About two hours west of gatlinburg. Sounds like hail outside but it's really the wind torpedoing limbs and acorn into the house.

Damn...that sucks. We really like Gatlinburg.
