we like staying in the Bear Creek Golf village area. It looks to be pretty far away from the fires listed in the map link posted. I hope they made it out ok. Beautiful area, cabins are beautiful.

Just heard that Leconte Lodge and shelter are gone.
That sucks. I'm waiting to hear news about the old structures along Roaring Fork. They are right in the middle of the worst of it, so my gut is telling me that they are probably gone, too.

This article from USA Today gives a good overview of the damage done to hotels, businesses, and homes around Gatlinburg.

That article has some inaccurate info in it (Ober Gatlinburg). I'd read with a grain of salt.

My finacee's parents own a cabin in Black Bear Falls, they have been going every year since their honeymoon in 84. They go up every year for Thanksgiving and throughout the year they are all devastated. Me and my finacee were going up there for our honeymoon in April she is heartbroken.

This may have been posted already, but this is a crazy video of someone trying to escape Gatlinburg.

Holy shite and I thought escaping Denham in rising water was horrifying

I am hoping this is incorrect. I was just there Saturday!

When we left Sunday, the fall leaves were every where. This is just compounding the problem. The fire itself is probably needed for the forest, but those old buildings downtown do not stand a chance. Hoping for rain. Love that part of the country. GSMNP is my favorite National park/forest.

Yeah that was pretty scary. If they had gotten hung up on a tree or ran off the road in the smoke, they'd be in serious trouble. It looked like every cabin they passed was burning down.

Supt Cash just said that LeConte Lodge is intact but fires are flanking it. The shelter is down a ways from Lodge and he did not say anything specific about it. They are trying to protect Lodge it's a high value asset, his words.
Aquarium is intact on generator power animals are okay

unfortunately this is true too if they cant get it contained a little better. if they get more rain and no more of that wind from yesterday they may have seen the worst of it.

buddy in Knoxville is saying 60% of Gatlinburg is gone according to a cop up there. Bringing in cadaver dogs to fin bodies for people that were trapped

One other thing to think about. Internal combustion engines will suffocate running in smoke filled air like that as well as overheat because the radiator cannot cool down the engine with the extremely hot dense air outside. One of the many things they should be thankful for added to the list you gave.

How long will it take for the forest to recover? As in, how long before it looks like it's "supposed to look" if that makes sense?
Not the cabins and what not, but the actual forest?
I'd say the cabins and stuff could be rebuilt within what... a year or two at the most? Or I'm I being wildly optimistic?

that seems like a bit of an exaggeration...

things will start to grow back in the spring. trees are obviously going to take longer. ground cover will come back much sooner
