quote:

Frederick's sentence includes: $25,850 in restitution to be shared among Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation and the International Crane Foundation.

200 hours of community service (the most ever ordered by this court.) This time is to be spent with Texas Parks and Wildlife and/or the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The maximum of five years probation. An order that Frederick turn over all firearms.

The rescinding of Frederick's hunting license for the next five years in all states.

Eta2: In fairness to the thread, I take no stance.

For two fricking birds? That's an it overboard IMO. I did a lot of stupid shite as a youngster that I've learned from.

Yeah that's stupid. IMO, a steep fine and community service would be enough.

I think his license should be revoked before they take his guns

They just take all your family guns?
That's bs

Ex: they can take my revolutionary war rifle that's been in the family forever

I guess. I hear a few years I think big time game violation. But this was killing 2 out of 400 or so.

Plus I read a great article about these particular birds and the months leading up to their demise. Hit me in the feels.

I need to find the link, but long story short, they came from SWLA flew across the border somewhere between Winnie and Beaumont to some private land. It was kept quite for a few months. Then word got out to birders who wanted to see them. Very respectful for a couple more months. Then one afternoon this kid rode out there about dark and popped them both. They weren't a "breeding pair", but they were a young male and female that had token up with each other, surviving on their own, and the people in the know were speculating they'd breed the next spring in the wild.

Two endangered birds on which a lot of tax dollars were spent. frick this dipshit. I'd make him pay the fine and charge him interest. Make him pay enough to where he will bare witness to the expense and maybe others will take heed.
This ain't like shooting robins, being a bird over the limit, or running water chickens in your mud boat. I can understand youthful indiscretion, but something like this warrants a harsher response than the standard slap on the arse for being a dumb kid.

I can't get behind suspending his hunting license the rest of his life and forfeiture of all of his guns. I can 1,000% agree with confiscating the gun that was used during the kill as well as his vehicle, and anything he used in his god forsaken crime. I don't care if their wings are coated in gold. People walk away with multiple dwi's, drug charges, and violent crimes in this country with far less harsher penalties that this.

I respect the law that they have and do not condone the crime. I just take exception with the lifetime hunting ban and loss of guns posts that were made.

There have been a lot of cranes poached already, not just these. I think the punishment is to make an example of someone, and that's why everyone wants this vindictive overkill on the punishment. To be fair, if the story about him being specifically shown the birds at a hunt previously and told about them being seriously endangered, is true, he's an arse. Sometimes I wonder if people with that attitude about wanton killing really ever change their tune. He is young tho, and I'm sure that played into the judges decision to give him only a 5 yr ban.

I don't know about forever, but I completely agree that he deserved the book thrown at him. I would like to know why TPWF is getting the money when LDWF are the ones that spent time and money on raising these birds.

Punk kid got what he deserved. Whether they are part of an experimental flock or not (which he likely did not know), they are an endangered species. The kid clearly didn't give a damn. I recall reading that he shot them with a rifle, although that could have been a non-hunter thar refers to any long gun as a "rifle".

Regardless, it's not like this punk didn't know what he was doing. He got what he deserved.

That's a great article. The moron who did this deserves to be punished severely. It would be nice to see these birds thriving in Louisiana again.
