I have a ton of limbs and shite that fall around my house, I usually lean them up against something and break them and use them for my fire pit.

i think im getting old and this isnt working as well, was thinking about getting an ax or hatchet, I should have one anyway....

was looking online and there are some really high end ones

anything you would recommend? do I just sharpen it with a grinder? need a special wheel?

these things are pretty fancy

Best Made

Estwings look nice.

Don't buy Gerber. Got one for backpacking because it was light. The blade sucks total dick.

Personally, I just got Husky brand from home depot. I don't use them often. I have a regular ax and a camp ax.

Ax

Camp Ax

You could sharpen it with a grinder or with a regular bastard mill file (what I usually do).

I'm sure there are reasons to get the nice, high end ones. I just don't think any of them will apply to an ax I only use on rare occasions.

As an alternative, consider a small saw. I bought a Bahco Laplander folding saw last year. I use it to make fires when I'm hiking. It can process wood very quickly.

look up cordless chain saws. These may serve your purpose better.

Pay attention to the handle. I have one that's about 15 years old and the blade has been great but it has a fiberglass handle with rubber grip on it. At the time it looked fancy and felt great but now the rubber has dry rotted away and it's super uncomfortable to use. Where the rubber was is now empty space and there are sharp fiberglass edges. I'd get a solid wood or fiberglass handle.

Get a $20 Pittsburgh Axe w fiberglass handle from harbor freight with a lifetime warranty. Not much that can go wrong with an axe other than breaking the handle

I have a schrade survival axe and also a SOG kukri

Both are great and the axe is stupid sharp plus has a fire steel rod in the handle.

Axe is definitely more top heavy and better suited to falling trees but swings really nice. Just branches and brush the kukri IMO.

For general around the yard and camp stuff, the Eastwing axe and hatchet are hard to beat. Full metal head and handle all one piece. Will last forever and holds an edge decently.

If your going ot be doing a lot of splitting, then look for something with a wider head (wedge shaped) or get a splitting maul.

I have done several cords this year from storm downed trees and bought a Mintcraft splitting maul - its really not a true maul - kind of a hybrid ax. It works OK at splitting or chopping, but the blade has to be kept sharp. I probably hit it with a file after every 3-4 hours of use and it should probably happen more frequently than that.

Gerber = Fiskars on their stuff.

IIRC, the Gerber version is sold at Lowe's and Academy, and the Fiskars is sold at Home Depot. Still a solid hatchet. I haven't sharpened mine yet, and it's probably 5 years old and gets used almost every day during the winter
