Not necessarily to you slackster, but for those who treat this as some kind of virtue, why?

"You father failed you if he didn't teach you this" makes no sense. Automatics are more practical for most Americans now.

There isn't any innate virtue in a manual transmission. I say this as someone who can drive a manual but hasn't done so since my teens.

I can even drive a left-handed stick and have done it recently. But buying a new vehicle with a standard transmission is kind of silly these days.

I miss the hell out of owning a manual. My first car was a Maxima with a 5 speed, I later had a 05 Nissan Frontier with a 6 speed, it also had no cruise control which made interstate driving a total bitch. Both of those were certainly fun to drive though. When I bought my current truck('12 F250) I almost went look at the Dodge just so I could get a manual. My fiance will be in the market for a 4Runner in about a year and I was bummed to learn they're no longer offered in a manual.

Fun and engagement are some of the virtues of a manual transmission. If you look at cars as an appliance and don't drive just for the hell of driving then you'll never understand.

Ah, it's scary when you're on a mountain trail going downhill in 4lo and you want to shift up to 2nd...for a second there it feels like there's no resistance and if it didn't go into gear you'd go careening down the mountain.

I thought it was amid shift feature like the start assist.

I agree with your sentiment, but to play devil's advocate, you could argue that being able to drive a manual means you're basically able to drive any vehicle on the road. Being able to drive an automatic is all you need for any practical reason, but if you got in a pinch and had a manual transmission available, you'd be fricked.

Personally I think being able to drive a manual goes in the same pile as being able to change your own oil. I can do both, and changed the oil myself in two vehicles within the last week, but the entire time I was reminded why I just take it into the quick lube place more often than not.

Most of my cars have been manual. I dumped my last one earlier this year, and doubt I'll ever go back. It's the freaking worst in BR traffic. Stuck in first & second gear for miles and miles. It's a bummer. I feel like I have more control with a manual transmission.

Count me in that number. I plan to buy a stick shift when my little girl gets older. She needs to learn how to drive a manual transmission and change a tire.

Meh. My manual doesn't bother me in traffic at all. Let the traffic get ahead and coast along in the right lane. You can stay off the clutch and brakes completely if traffic is moving at all.

All you have to do is roll at the average speed of the lane you're in and you'll get to the back of the car in front of you right as they take off and stop again 50 yards ahead. You don't have to stay on their arse, and you'll see that you're still covering the same amount of pavement as they are, but far less miserably.

My husband's last jeep was also a manual and I foolishly said I would help drive it on a roadtrip to Utah(I hadn't driven a manual in years but figured it wouldn't be so difficult). Yeah that lasted a whole 20 minutes Must have picked the worst section of road to do that...it was this twisty, uphill/downhill area near Bryce Canyon. I thought we were gonna die, as soon as I could I pulled over at first gas station and jumped out saying "sorry you are just gonna have to drive the rest of the way unless you want me to kill us in the process".

ETA: I did feel really bad that he drove the rest of the way. I tried to make it up to him by paying for all the gas and meals on that trip as well as making sure I didn't nag him any.

The yuppie city folk that spend their 40 min commute going 5 miles through red lights will never enjoy driving the way people who prefer back roads and consider two people at a stop sign or a cane truck as "traffic".

I mean she really doesn't need to learn how to do either of these things, but the bonding time you'll experience as she burns up the clutch will never be forgotten.

I learned on a Chevy 3 on the tree in the 80s, and wasn't allowed to touch an automatic until I mastered the manual.

Yeah I burned out the clutch on one of my older cars because I would ride the clutch and had no idea how bad that was for the clutch and transmission

I don't really know how to change a tire. I mean....I was taught how to do it by my dad as well. But if you've never had to do it...you just kinda forget. I'm sure I could do it if I absolutely had to on my own.

My dad was more about making sure I always had roadside assistance on any vehicle I own. Because of him drilling that in my head...I'll always have a AAA membership.

That's asinine. I hate driving. I spend so much of my life sitting in the damn stupid arse car that it has become one of my biggest dislikes in life.

The stick shift makes it bearable though. I'm a mechanical nerd and love mechanical things. That little Volkswagen diesel with a very crisp 6 speed behind it is cool, and hearing a rattling turbo diesel while rowing through gears is enjoyable to me. If my car was an auto gas burner, I'd hate driving to the point that I'd probably look for another job. I never rent cars just because mine is more fun and it puts something a little enjoyable into an otherwise completely miserable task.

4lo in 1st is all torque. If you're traveling any amount of distance I would stick with 4hi. If you have to be in low to get out of something you best pick a gear and stick with it.

Pretty sure both features are either all on or all off. I wouldn't toggle between them. Once you get the hang of what they are capable of, you would be amazed at what your vehicle can do.

One of the dealerships set up an obstacle course of crushed concrete pilings, 8x8 rail ties, straight up/down hills and high angle turns. I put my jeep in 2nd gear 4lo and did the entire course just by holding the wheel. Blew my mind.

After the second Toyota FJ had to be towed off the track they stopped letting them on.
