Election year, national turmoil, world conflict, top heavy QB play, cord cutting, last year started out with great SNF and MNF close games that ensued each and every week(unlike this yr to date), Goodell and Kap and Inflategate,etc..the legal and SJW storylines tainting people's escapism vehicle of Football during a "heavy" time period..is a real turnoff.

For me it has gotten too slow. College is no better, but I am more emotionally invested.

The constant timeouts and breaks ruin it for me.

Replay is out of control (especially college). Everyone wanted perfect, and this is what we got.

I'm bored senseless at an actual NFL game in person. With all the two and four minute breaks it feels like a dressed scrimmage.

Going to bathroom and kitchen via watching on tv at home, having multiple TVs and games simultaneously breaks up the monotonous nature..

For those with such home set ups, or patrons of sports bars or sports books..it's a no brainier.

as I said earlier, I think the NFL really needs to address their borderline stupid TV rules.

"You're going to get the Rams vs. Bucs match up in your area and you're going to watch it because its on."

CFB is also a tad more ratings proof because the networks don't have to pick a game until 2 weeks out and they also have more games to pick from in a given week.

Their is to much NFL on tv these days for many to get excited about actually watching.. In the past, I watched NFL on Sunday's and Monday night.. Usually two games worth.. Now, I watch a few minutes on Thursday, a spattering in Sunday and a few on Monday.. Unless the saints are on, I don't really make a point to watch until December when the playoff and seedings hunt is on..

Personally don't see the anthem thing being a driving factor but do believe it plays into the overall saturation point that is leading to a decline in viewership.. To much time is spent talking about the players actions, motivations and emotions, with less pure highlights and analysis..

This problem is at the feet of ESPN and their continuing content change from sports to opnion 24 hr news style programming.. They waste so much energy trying to capture small sub groups only to alienate the average consumer because they feel they can't get the content elsewhere.. While we can't always get the content elsewhere; we can simply turn the channel and forget to change it back..

Sunday Night Football just hit a 5 yr low and down 38% from last years week 6 game,

quote:

a 9.0/15 rating in metered-market results, the Houston Texans’ 26-23 overtime over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday was not only a season low for SNF but the worst the NFL powerhouse series has done in nearly five years. Only the October 23, 2011 game — in which the New Orleans Saints smashed the Colts 62-7 — has come in with a lower MM rating (8.2). Unlike last week, last night’s game did not face a Presidential debate on all the other networks.

I would expect tomorrow's MNF numbers to be similarly bad even with a NY team playing tonight. I have watched maybe 5 min of that game and have read on this board that the game is absolute shite. I've had the baseball game on all night.

Like Sean McDonough just said tonight, ratings are down because of the way these games are being officiated. I switched off of that awful game. It doesn't help that the jets suck arse either.

They're destroying their own game. Something has to be done about officiating, it's completely out of control.

I've been to a few NFL games, and I'd prefer college any day.

For all its flaws in terms of skill, technique, and the whole amateurism issue, college football does the game day experience right. You don't get that type of pageantry in the NFL.

Also, though it's not a superior product in terms of talent level, it's infinitely more entertaining. No lead is safe, no field goal is a gimme, an 80 yard play could happen at any moment, and the margin for error is larger.

I'm not watching as a way to show my displeasure with politics being involved in football. It is a right to protest so there will be no disparaging remarks. I just don't agree with what I see as the divisive nature of it. Until then, my personal protest is in effect. Evidently, I'm not alone.

Get rid of helmets, shrink the shoulder pads, and stop all the ticky tack penalties.

Last night was unwatchable with the penalties. The announcers were even repeating that.

They're going in the opposite direction from that though

The first thing they need to do is release their grading system, and publicly release officials grades.

After a sample period (10+ games), I would also not allow officials to officiate teams they either flag the most or flag the least.

Watched a great movie last night (Chinatown) instead of the MNF game. Even my wife mentioned last night "Why aren't you watching the game". Told her the NFL sucks and has become a league of pussies and stupid suspensions.

Hopefully they bring back the football I used to love. But I doubt they will with their PC culture.

Exactly. You can never cheer a great catch, or a turnover, or a touchdown. Have to wait for a goddamn replay. Most of the time they are wrong anyway. Scrap the whole system.

Use your watchespn app to catch some rugby

Favorite part of watching rugby is getting thru the whole game with stoppages in ~100 minutes.

As bad as the TV ratings have been for the NFL and as poorly as NBC’s Sunday Night Football has performed, ESPN’s Monday Night Football has been even worse. The first presidential debate caused an all-time record low turnout for MNF while Week 5's underwhelming match up scored the lowest ratings since ESPN acquired the rights in 2006.

Last night’s ugly game between the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets – which featured 20 penalties – managed to plummet even lower, earning just a 6.3 overnight rating.

The game marks a slight drop from the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 6.5 rating from last week. It also puts the NFL squarely in MLB territory in terms of viewership, which is a scary thought for the once invincible ratings king.

3 & 1/2 hours is to long, the game is only 4 15min quarters. and it takes 3&1/2 hours.....

Reduce the commercials make the money back by covering the players in ads. Then put more games on TV.

Also the refs suck.
