As I said for years. Cause and effect are not instantaneous. You have to earn viewers back.

Oh, I agree. But it can be done. The ratings are still high, they're just down by NFL standards.

1) Get rid of Thursday night games
2) Stop showing shitty small-market teams in primetime
3) Change review back to two challenges only. Perfection is overrated.
4) Stop calling PI so much for so little contact

the problem is that the NFL does a terrible job of understanding their product. I don't even have a modicum of hope that goodell and the owners understand why people are starting to turn the channel. worse, expect more changes you hate as an overreaction by the league.

still high, but when looking at the percentage they're losing, it's fricking code red, defcon 1 level shite. some games are down as much as 40% from last year. if you're looking down the line at selling the broadcast rights...the owners are sweating because the difference shakes out to be a lot of fricking money.

putting small market teams in primetime is really a good measuring stick of the health of your product. if they go and put only big market teams in primetime last year, the ratings will still not fully recover, and worse, they'll be blind as to the extent of the damage.

it was never a problem before, why should it be now?

it's not just PI...their rule book needs to lose a lot of weight.

Which is why I think they'll finally put an effort on improving the game. Could be wishful thinking, I know

I agree with a previous poster that the owners have just been coasting. They've taken the fans for granted so I'm very pleased to see the fans tuning out. The only way to get change is to affect their bottom line.

That's an obstacle without a doubt but wasn't an issue until the product started suffering.

There was a time when I would watch any game period and would find it riveting. Now I don't even get extra enjoyment from watching the saints. It's all the same watered down shite

It's been a long time since I wanted to watch Oakland and Jacksonville play I don't even get to watch the saints because I'm not in that zone. It's just restrictive way to sell your product.

The rule changes have hurt too. I miss the days of a dominating defense. Only a couple of teams had it but it was fun to watch for me. I don't mind low scoring if it is because defense is making plays. I loved Ty Law shutting down wr's because they were allowed to put their hands on them.

they don't know why people liked it to begin with...that's the problem.

this is true in regards to risk management. I think they're less hesitant to do this shite because frick you, that's why but they haven't been coasting. they've completely reworked overtime rules, doubled the rule book, moved markers, changed defensive rules...they've been busy bees. The rules and competition committee has never been more active.

fatigue. You can only shove the Cardinals vs. the Seahawks down the East Coast's throat so much before they stop clearing their evening schedules.

Last night was actually a relative increase if you want to compare it to current year rather than the previous one. Next week is Dallas vs philly so we'll put this to the test

Likely result: ratings decrease from previous year

The Seattle Seahawks win over the New England Patriots on ‘Sunday Night Football’ drew a 14.3/23 overnight rating/share (14.3% of the homes in the biggest 56 markets watched the game and 23% of the homes watching TV at the time were tuned-in.) That was the best week 10 overnight rating in 5 years (14.5 for Patriots-Jets in 2011) and up 13% from last year’s week 10 game (Cardinals-Seahawks) that drew a 12.6.

It'll be interesting to keep an eye on the ratings with the election now over.

Yesterday could have just been an anomaly because it was two of the leagues most popular teams and a Super Bowl 49 rematch. Next week is a match up of average or below average teams and I doubt we see the same ratings.

Oh, I agree. The NFL has been making excuses that the election had a lot to do with it, so we'll see now if that was the case.

I don't understand how the election could impact ratings. They're saying viewers were so glued to election coverage that they didn't switch off from FOX or CNN a few hours on Sundays for games? The Cubs in the playoffs could've had an impact for a few days in October.

From Michael Mulvihill of Fox.

quote:

14.2 average for Week 10 FOX double vs 11.7 for a single last year. Should cut our y-t-d deficit roughly in half when final numbers are in.

Cable news yesterday vs last Sun prior to election: - Down -32% vs afternoon NFL - Down -44% vs primetime NFL

This is what happens when you turn smash mouth football into soccer flopping air raids.

In defense of Soccer I doubt whether they would ever sell out to get 10-9 games( instead of intense 3-2 or 2-1 match.

Defenses were once revered/ feared in the NFL:

Purple People Eaters, Dallas Doomsday Defense, Steel Curtain, Orange Crush, Fearsome Foursome, Grits Blitz( Falcons ), No Name D / Killer B's( Dolphins),Dome Patrol, Raiders needed no nickname & were called many unflattering things.....

Now it's 40 passes per game & receivers & DBs playing pitty pat.

Soccer would never sell out like that for the sake of scoring.

Physicality is why we loved Football.

The NFL still blows away anything else in the sporting realm when it comes to ratings, and the Thanksgiving game between the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys was another example. Fox said 35.1 million people watched, making it the most-watched regular-season game in the network’s history. Fox has been broadcasting NFL games since 1994.

It set a regular season record dating back to 1995. Just say it, the NFL is still on top

Edit: 1995 since that's what the NFL Mobile update stated.
