The final death toll (directly or indirectly) from Hurricane Katrina was 1,833 people.
Some reports have it at 1,836.

705 people are still reported as missing

At some points during the storm, the winds of Katrina were timed at 174 miles per hour

The total damage of Hurricane Katrina is an estimated $108 billion

15 million people were affected by Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina caused over 400,000 people throughout the Gulf Coast region to lose their homes.

Hundreds of thousands of residents in the storm-affected area are said to still be unemployed to this day due to Hurricane Katrina

Ha Ha - These hundreds of thousands have also never expected a job, looked for a job or would get their arse up and go if you gave them a job.

the death toll certainly doesn't count those that died a slow death long after from depression and it's related maladies.

that number is far greater....

Hmmm I wonder how many of those people are alive and took the chance to disappear.

What was the reason for their unemployed status prior to Katrina?

Has anyone ever done a suicide study on this? I bet there was a big spike in suicides amongst the people affected negatively by the storm.

11 years later and hundreds of thousands are still unemployed? I am sure some have a valid reason to be unemployed 11 years after the fact but there is absolutely no reason for hundreds of thousands to be unemployed. The fact is they would be unemployed if no one ever knew of a hurricane Katrina. Those people were also unemployed before.
