Read somewhere that if you've ever nodded off at the wheel, the average time you've been sleeping is around 8 seconds. Pretty scary.

Same here. On a cool day with the warm sun hitting you and driving down interstate after working since 5:00am. Almost sideswiped and 18 wheeler and it scared the shite out of me. This was over 10 years ago and it hasn't happened since. I can't forget that feeling.

The only time it has happened to me was after working 15 hours. Long story short, I had been awake over 30 hours.

I've been there and it's tough driving when tired.
We drove all night to Disney World and split up drive, I will never do it again.

I fell asleep at a stop light once coming back from a bar. Woke up and it was green. Luckily it was 3am and there was no one around.

I second sunflower seeds for sure. Working two jobs while in school has put me driving home after being awake for over 24 hours many times. The scariest part to me is not dozing off because often times I catch myself. It is completely going into zombie mode and suddenly realizing I don't remember the last ten minutes of the drive.

because the trick to falling asleep is trying to stay awake

I fell asleep while driving when I was 16 and on the way to football practice at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

We had a game Friday night out of town in Rockdale, TX, didn't get back to China Spring until about 2 a.m., didn't get home until 3 a.m. and then took some time to fall asleep.

Dozed off while driving that next morning and flipped my truck six times.

I just close one eye and let it rest for 5 minutes or so and then the other.

Problem solved.

There is a period before you fall asleep where you have trouble keeping your eyes open. I don't understand how people ignore this and keep driving.

I did it once but hit a cone and woke up. It's pretty easy to.
