I'm going to highjack this thread for a second. Do you guys interpret a "M" as millions or thousands? Several individuals in my company use the single "M" for thousands, and the double "MM" to represent millions.

They do that because it is the correct abbreviation. Roman numerals, brah.
Sidenote: Those same people can probably also write in cursive.
I always thought it was related to the French mille (thousands).

It's not "correct", it's just older. Which, in most cases, means worse.
It doesn't make any goddamned sense to mix roman and arabic numerals, and "that's just how they do it" is not a good reason for anything. No thought whatsoever was put into this decision. MM means two thousand, not one million. What fricking idiot decided he could change how an ancient numeral system works and everyone should go along with it?

I've done it recently and it's because I mash the numbers accidentally before the $ or I plan on spelling out "dollars" but get lazy and just hit the sign. Good enough for a message board.

I've never seen this before, but it seems to have recently become a thing.
What am I missing?
European influence on our American ways.

I realize it can work either way...but I usually use "K" for thousand because kilo=1,000 and M for million because mega=1,000,000.

I've also seen a fair number of idiots putting the percent sign in front of the number from time to time.
I definitely think it is some how related to typing often on smartphones. And just a lack of caring about the way things should be.

I think Brits put £ before the number. The € is used after it.

I think that's from "The Nightly Show" with Larry Wilmore. He does a segment called "Keep it 100", as in 100% true (to yourself, or whatever).

The dollar sign should be before the number, M=1000, and always use the Oxford comma.

I see this about %40 of the time
