Manfred looking at limits on relief pitchers

ESPN
"You know the problem with relief pitchers is that they're so good. I've got nothing against relief pitchers but they do two things to the game; the pitching changes themselves slow the game down and our relief pitchers have become so dominate at the back end that they actually rob action out of the end of the game, the last few innings of the game. So relief pitchers is a topic that is under active consideration. We're talking about that a lot internally."
I am torn on this, but his statement stinks.

this is stupid reason to me
eta: And if the issue is the game slowing down, then put some stricter time limits for guys to come in the game. Oh youre changing pitchers? Ok you have 2 minutes until that guy has to throw a pitch. No slow walk out to the mound b.s. for him to get ready, and talk to the pitcher, and a bunch of warm ups. Hes gotta be ready to go now.
eta2:
ALSO, the two reasons contradict each other. Dominant pitching = faster games.

How about the batters do better...

What are they going to do? Make starters pitch all 9 innings no matter what?

I can think of a half dozen rule changes I would implement before this. As a novice MLB fan, this seems like a gross overstep of power.

Awful. There are better ways to speed up play and "they're too good" is about as bad as a reason could get for limiting the use of a type of player in pro sports. I imagine the MLBPA will have serious issues with this if they start marginalizing the earning potential for relievers and simultaneously increasing the stress and injury risk for starters

Make roids legal. That'll fix it.

Pardon my ignorance, but how will this speed the game up. Wouldn't more pitching changes and increased offense in late innings increase game lengths?

How about the pitch clock in between pitches that is currently in play in the minors? I know it would probably have to be collectively bargained, but that would be a way to speed things up, rather than neutering dominant relievers.
I feel like the improvements they have made the past couple years (clock between innings, clock for mound visits, batter's box rules) have helped to speed the game up. On the other hand, I don't really care if a ballgame takes 4.5 hours to finish, I'll watch regardless.

Mid inning pitching changes take a decent amount of time. I think it would save a little bit of time but it could be washed out by the increased offense. I don't know, it's a horrendous idea though

This is the opposite of the NBA...where free throw shooting sucks by big men, so they can adopt a rule to limit fouling.

There's plenty of scoring in MLB right now. The game is fine. Just like the idea of taking away the lowest part of the current strike zone, this is also a stupid idea.

How in the world could he intervene with a rule that forces Managers to put other pitchers at risk of injury?

Bring back the bullpen car!

Depends on what he means. If he want to end the righty up switch, lefty up switch, righty up switch in an inning by saying you can switch twice and inning or once an inning, that wouldn't be so bad. If he wants to limit how many pitchers can be used in a single game, I don't think that is all that great.
