The best authentic I found in Baton Rouge is El Pasta Dorado on Florida

Go to south / central Texas and eat some real authentic Mexican and it will change your mind.

I don't necessarily think authentic is better than Tex Mex. They are both good in their own right, but it just depends on what I'm in the mood for.

We have one place that I know of where you can get sort of real tacos....Don Tomas. And as mentioned it's owned by gringos and managed by Messicans.

Those tacos look exactly like the ones from the food truck on West Alabama in Houston.

Which, by the way, are the best tacos in Houston.

But then there are times that Torchy's trumps all.

I don't think you can consider Torchy's as Tex Mex. It's more of a "fusion" place. Korean BBQ taco places are not Tex Mex either, for the same reason.

I disagree somewhat. There are some really great TexMex places in Texas that are better than anything I've had elsewhere.

This is a gross oversimplification of Mexican food btw....just meant to show that it's not all about Northern Mexican food which we as Americans generally identify as "authentic".

You right... I should have clarified Northern Mexico authentic... reality is in most instances, that's all you are going to get in the states. Finding a Michoacean type place in the States is pretty rare (not impossible)

Or do they know that Christy and the other 8 fat dental hygienist will only go for the pre-prepared microwave nuked fajita chicken quesadilla with rice and beans and extra sour cream with no guacamole and two buckets of queso dip with extra chips and salsa with a large Diet Coke? It's strange that real Mexicans only provide the white man's bastardization of their food.

This made me chuckle.

I think there are two issues.

1) It's what the customers want. They want the cheese and grease, not a bunch of hunked vegetables.

2)

Yeah I dunno. They may be owned and managed per se, but most of the servers are as white as I am and most of the kitchen staff as well. Unlike Houston, which has a large supply of individuals who swam across the river.

Try Canal Street Bistro. Guillermo Peters used to run a great Mexican place on Roosevelt across from the Kenner Home Depot.
I ate at that restaurant on Roosevelt. It was very good.

The difference is in the little things and a lot of Texas restaurant suck at them too. Anyone can cook beef and put it on a sizzling platter

The tortillas at bad Tex-mex joints are warmed Cisco trash.

That's the most annoying part. Hell, even the Dallas airport Papacitos has better tortillas than anywhere I've had in La.

I just returned from Mexico and had the opportunity to try a few authentic restaurants. I do really enjoy authentic mexican tacos more along with the chorizo dishes.

But what I prefer about Tex-Mex is the cheese and chips and salsa.

There is a Mexican food truck by my office, as in it is three Mexican women who speak no English. Their beef cheek and beef tounge tacos are amazing. Just wanted to add this.

To me we're blurring lines here.

Growing up in GA, going to school in AL, etc., we had Mexican that is distinct from what I think of as Tex Mex. It wasn't authentic Mexican, more what I might call dirty strip mall Mexican.

Low quality ingredients, bland flour tortillas, mediocre meats, thin white queso, chips, salsa.

A lot of people I know from Dallas or Houston claim they never had that type of Mexican growing up, it was (what I would consider Tex Mex), places like Uncle Julios, Pappasitos, Chuys, Mi Cocina or El Fenix, stuff like that.

Surprised you can't find good authentic Mexican there. I have in-laws in Ruston and go there a lot. Even there, they have 2 hole in the walls. I don't even think the places have names, and only the kids speak any English. Both have great food, cash only of course.

Agreed. It's hard for me to go somewhere that doesn't have homemade tortillas.

"La Mexicana" in Gonzales is as legit of a Mexican place as you'll find. Gringo walks in and sticks out, there's hardly any English spoken. Food is real Mexican, not tex-mex, and it's great. Cons: no fountain drinks (only bottles of soda), and it's dirty as hell. I don't want to see the kitchen, but I enjoy the food that comes out of it
