TX Valedictorian under fire after bragging about scholarship undocumented status

A Texas high school valedictorian’s tweet boasting about her impressive academic accomplishments and undocumented status landed her in the middle of an online firestorm over immigration.
Mayte Lara Ibarra shot off the polarizing tweet last Friday after graduating from Crockett High School in Austin.
“Valedictorian, 4.5GPA, full tuition paid for at UT, 13 cords and medals, nice legs, oh and I’m undocumented,” she wrote.
The tweet included several graduation pictures and a few emojis: a medal, the Mexican flag, Hook ’em horns for the University of Texas, and a graduation cap. It swiftly went viral, receiving more than 400 retweets and nearly 20,000 likes before her account (@maytelara29) was deactivated.
What was probably intended to be another innocuous graduation post proved deeply controversial — drawing censure and praise.
Conservatives, namely supporters of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, were inflamed that an undocumented immigrant was getting a free ride on the University of Texas, presumably on the taxpayer’s dime. Much of the outrage invoked Trump’s plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Deserves to have the scholarship revoked purely because she is dumb enough to put that on twitter. Stupid stupid girl.

So she went to school for free? Good for her. Shame on us for allowing it to happen.

She should've come in legally. Then I don't have an issue with it

I'm surprised a valedictorian with a 4.5 GPA seems to fail to grasp the nuances of the immigration debate.
I'm pretty sure people don't think that all illegal immigrants are stupid.
They just want them to go through the proper channels to ensure that the process for all immigrants is controlled and equitable.
I also like how she threw the Mexican flag into her post. Oh, you have lots of national pride huh? Why don't you want to go back to Mexico for college? 1000:1 odds that she also lives and works in the U.S. for the rest of her life. But maybe she'll throw in a college spring break trip to Cancun so she can revel in her Mexican pride.

Isn't that how all scholarships work? I don't know a lot of 18 year olds who've paid more than nominal income taxes.
I took a shite load of y'all's money to pay for TOPS before I ever paid taxes.

I would. Seems like she actually earned it with good grades and SAT scores.
Its not like it was some scholarship given for being a resident of Texas.

So UT couldn't give a scholarship to someone that isn't a US Citizen? I agree the tweet is stupid, but not sure of the premise that only US Citizens can have a scholarship.

"Nice legs" in a tweet about yourself is probably the worse thing about this story.

I usually try to avoid comments in the local news sites but read a few about this story earlier in the week.
Some mentioned that TX high schools only require proof of residence (i.e. no documentation), that her high school was a very poor one (although still impressive to be Valedictorian, that she worked at CVS (why were they able to hire her?), and that she was incredibly stupid for drawing attention to herself in this way. Apparently, she had to deactivate her Twitter and Facebook shortly after that post.

One word...GOOD!
Deserves what she gets. 1) for being stupid & announcing that. 2) for being undocumented

Meh. Her legs aren't that nice.

Like in the other thread...
Someone is going to give the girl a scholarship even if the one she has now is revoked.
Too much a feel-good story.

Based on that tweet, she seems like a smug count.

I am confused. So she is proud of the fact that she is undocumented, that they presumably don't pay taxes and that she is getting a full ride on taxpayers money. Where is the pride in stealing something? Go the frick home to Mexico if you don't want to be a contributing citizen.
