When do you slow down for another boat? I took the boat yesterday afternoon to try out my trawl, as we idled down the bayou someone pulled the throttle back about have way just enough to push a bigger swell then took off again .... I always slow to match the speed of the other boat what do you do ?

My Dad taught me to slow down off plane to basically a crawl in smaller channels and fishing areas. If we were in a main channel, I could keep it on plane and running. If a boat was coming at us, we would slow down off plane to take the other boat's waves about 100 yards before passing the other boat.

Yep those assholes that slow down to a hard idle at hump speed shoot a bigger swell than if they had stayed on step. I will slow down for boats at anchor, tied to a dock or small boats idling. Really depends on the canal.

Just use common sense. If you have to question it, slow down. It won't cost you much time and you'll be happy when someone shows you the same consideration in the future.

Large body of water - on plane but try to give a wide birth.
Running boat lanes like on Toledo Bend - if you choose to fish right off the boat lane that's on you I am staying on plane
Small canal like a cracker head area on verret come off plane about 100 yrds before the boat idle by..when I get passed the boat I get on plane again.
A large canal like a 4 mile bayou I am coming by on plane but do try and give as much space as possible.

If I am back in the marsh I will pass at idle and not throw a wake.
If you are in the middle of the river or bay I am passing at full throttle and throwing a small wake unless you look like you need help

This right here!
Also. I get rustled at marinas when jack legs don't understand NO WAKE zones. Boats tied up all around and you come in "idling" with the bow pointing up and a wake so big you could jump it with a jey ski. Drives me crazy

I usually wave people to keep coming full speed if I'm fishing and someone is running towards me , and I always slow down to crawl for other boats .

Another peeve is when someone stays on step passing a boat launch
Posted on 5/27/16 at 9:25 am to all_over_it
Depends how far off from someone you are IMHO. Sometimes it is better to stay on plane

If everyone be running, I be running. If someone is stopped or slow or loaded heavy with family, I slow down or idle by. It isn't difficult. Just don't ignore your surroundings and be nice.

This is why I usually just wave people on to stay on plane. Typically it's a lot less wake and they aren't sitting there staring to see if you're catching fish either.

My biggest problem is dumbasses backing up on a boat ramp to start unhooking their boat and loading tackle. When I get to the ramp I am ready to back in. Makes me want to run them off the side, but I just stand there and watch them frick around. I figure they're too stupid to know any better.

This. I hate to see two things at boat launches: People who don't have their shite together, and people too stupid to back a trailer into the water. I can't tell you how many grown arse men I have watched snake a boat trailer down a ramp and have to pull up and get straight 3 or 4 times.

I try to be considerate in pockets and creeks. If it's a main boat lane on Toledo and somebody is worm fishing right next to it, I give them the "Independence Day".

I usually try to wave at people to get them to stay on plane. I'd rather them zip past me than idle.
If I'm running a navigation canal and I see someone standing and fishing or kids on the boat I'll idle past them but running shallow water sometimes makes coming off plane not an option, this puts kayaks in a weird spot but I do my best to avoid those situations. When idling past someone it's always at a no wake speed and I try to come off plane as early as possible. If they are fishing a cut I need to get through I'll pull up the motor and pole through.
This might be unpopular but I do not slow down, ever, for camps on navigation canals without no wake zones.

I always slow to dead idle, no wake.
In passing situations in a channel or river is what gets me. There will be a tug, sail or motorboat going slow and I want to pass. I try to contact them on the radio and get no response. Well in a large boat (60' +) I normally have a 3'-4' wake at cruise. If they are doing 8-10 knots, the only way I can pass them is cruising speed or pass them on semi plane (which throws a bigger wake). Staying behind them all day in a place like the ICW isn't an option. Then they look at you like you're an a-hole.
On the Mississippi is the worst. Tugs will yell at you to slow down in any situation. Going upstream is almost like a semi plane at times. If I go any slower, I'd be going backwards.

Since you were trawling your vessel was restricted in its ability to maneuver. That places you very high on the scale of stand on vessels.
The normal order of right of way is: 1) Not under command; 2) Restricted ability to maneuver; 3) Constrained by draft; 4) Fishing boats; 5) Sailboats; 6) Powerboats; 7) Seaplanes; and, 8) Wing-in-ground craft.
In a restricted channel the order of right of way is: 1) Boats over 20 meters; 2) Sailboats; 3) Fishing boats; and, 4) Crossing boats.

Sailboat can be a RAM when not under power and are under sail. I'm sure you know that though. Throwing it out there for the other guys.
