re: Is the term "coonass" offensive?

At the end of the world war when Paris was liberated, Parisians were amused that guys from a regiment that was mostly from south Louisiana spoke French that was old French from the 1700s when their families had emigrated to Acadia, not modern French. It was similar to the language that country people spoke, and was associated with street people, cheap whores, day laborers, hustlers, etc. who did not fit into urban society, and we're known as connaises. Has nothing to do with coons or asses. Think canaille, a kid who is too smart or tricky for his own good. It was probably intended as an insult from the eurofags who didn't have the balls to stand up for their own nation and resented being saved by Louisiana boys. Think millennials.
tl;dr: learn to read.

It's offensive. Quit saying it.
If you think you're making yourself more Cajun by referring to yourself as a Coonass, please stop. You're not impressing anyone. You're the black kid with his pants halfway down his arse thinking that he's impressing people by saying the N-word.

I have no problem with the term. And yes, my family roots go back to when they were kicked out.
Was a good move. How in there right mine wants to freeze their arse off 7 months out the year. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconrotflmao.gif)

Redneck is absolutely an offensive term. Like I mentioned earlier, I was under the impression that coonass was sort of a compliment. I was dumbfounded and at a loss for words when she said that it was an insult. I stumbled through the apology, but was still confused.
You apologized? You should have told her to "quit eavesdropping on others' conversations, weirdo." Don't be a pussy. It's not offensive. I believe there used to be mock license plates with the butthole of a raccoon facing the viewer that said "Registered Coonass."

My grandma had a "Proud Coonass" license plate on the front of her car.

I've always found the term offensive, and I don't let people use it on me. Especially out of state people.

I'm not Cajun and find pretending to be one because I'm from the fringes of so. LA a bit disingenuous. But both parents grew up in Acadiana fully immersed in it. My thought has always been that you can call others one if you are Cajun, but it's insulting and uncouth if you are from outside of Cajun country. Now the neighboring patron in your likely fictional story is lame as hell, but it's still not inconceivable that someone would find it offensive. And I've always felt that it was probably more offensive to older generations. The good news is that Cajuns are generally too good natured and fun loving to get worked up.

I'm half coonass and the other half is offended.

people who aren't coonasses would probably act more offened than anybody else, kind of like how all the bitching about Indian mascots came from white liberal arts professors.

The down votes in this thread are all over the place.
Regardless, I stand by the idea that an outside should probably avoid it unless they know the company. I'm mostly Polish and I take no offense to the term "Polack", but I wouldn't call someone else a Polack without knowing them.

Whatever you say , I barely knew him and we're true French rather than Cajun. I suppose it was important to someone in his constituency back then , or him. Just posted it to point out to the OP that it has been deemed offensive for quite some time.

That is the most level-headed, sincere and cogent post I have ever seen from you. Congrats and UPVOTE.

Hey fellow Pollack what up?

My word of advice is to not use this around work people not familiar with the term (or coworkers in general if playing it safe). Mainly because they think you are talking about black people, and good luck explaining that one after you get canned.
