I'm Sick of Panhandlers

BR is overrun with these people right now. I can't go get gas on Seigen without somebody coming up to me asking for money. I can't walk into or out of Walmart without having to listen to a five min story about how someone's aunt died and their on the way to a funeral but they need $20 to buy a part for their car to get there. And I'm not exaggerating. It's happened to me 5 times in the last two weeks and seems to be happening more frequently.
I'm sorry. It's not that I'm not sensitive to plight. It's just that I think 98% of these people are full of shite. If you're driving a fairly new crew cab GMC Sierra and you're having to walk up to people pumping their own gas to ask for a few dollars to fill yours up, you're either lazy or failing at life. If you get snooty with me after you tell me your daughter and your momma just died and you need $35 to buy a new alternator at Walmart and I tell you no, don't get mad at me when I call you out talking to someone else telling them a completely different story.
Wasn't there a thread on here where someone videoed the group that usually stands at the light on Seigen driving up and parking at the Taco Bell? I've noticed they haven't been there in a while.

Oil field baws need money too.
Those F250 truck notes aren't gonna pay themselves.

I'm amazed at how coordinated the panhandlers are at the College Drive off ramp at I-10. I take that exit to go home every day from work, and every single day there is one panhandler there, begging money from cars. They never miss a single day. If this was a work crew, they would be the most reliable work crew I've ever seen. And here's the amazing thing. It's always a different hobo. It's almost never the same guy (or gal) twice. It's a different motherfricker pretty much every day. What is there, some sort of website telling these people where to beg in Baton Rouge, where they can sign up for certain days or some shite? They've worn a little path in the grass from walking up and down the off ramp. It's ridiculous.

I don't have this problem because I'm not afraid to be a bit of a dick to panhandlers. Just go on about your day.

I know I shouldn't but it always makes me feel bad. I mean I've been in bad situations before, never to the point that I have to go ask random people for pocket change, but I get that everyone can have a train of bad shite happen. Life is hard. I guess that's why it bothers me so much because I know that most of these people are full of shite and just trying to prey on people's good will to get free cash.
The only time I've ever given money to a stranger is when a guy approached me at the Shell on Seigen a few years ago and said "Hey bra, I don't want to lie to you. I'm broke and could really use a drink. You got a couple of dollars to spare?" I appreciated his honesty.

I usually say "please GTF away from me, thanks." It's been highly effective over the years. The worst I ever get is them mumbling something under their breath as they walk away. I think the magic word helps, plus a flash of the crazy eye as I look at them.

Learn how to ignore people who try to use your natural courtesy against you. It will save you lots of time and grief.
Examples:
Salesperson calls you on the phone. At the very instant that you realize it is a sales call hang up. Don't say anything.
Panhandler approaches while you are walking. Keep walking.
Pandhandler is short, dressed in a baseball or cheerleader outfit, and is pandhandling for their team, keep walking.
Panhandler approaches while you are filling your car. Keep filling your car.
Have confusing responses ready in the event the panhandler changes tack. "Are you too important to talk to me?" "Are you too important for me not to?"
When the cashier at Lowe's asks you your telephone number so that you can be sent junk mail (it's complicated), tell her you don't have one. When she points it out in you hand, deny that it is a phone.
When same cashier asks for your zip code (same reason) tell her you don't have one. Etc.

I haven't spent much time downtown lately. Pretty sure Jeff parish keeps that shite on lockdown cause I really don't see many in Kenner or Metaire.
But College Drive and Seigen are littered with them.

Saw two men this week who were both in their lower twenties-at the most- who were begging. Dude you're a physically fit twenty year old. Go cut grass, clean a kitchen, work in a lumber yard, work on a construction crew, something. Don't waste these years begging

Take college/corporate everyday. No clue how true this story is, but I was told they essentially have a pimp. He gives them a place to stay, they pandhandle and he gets a %. Thats why they rotate locations/areas.

Just say no and move on. Trust me, I live in downtown Houston. Nobody is in need and they're all either druggies or full of shite. Say no and go about your business.

So it's better if they just go to jail?
Posted on 4/27/16 at 7:10 am to elprez00
Once the weather gets hot enough they'll move on.

I did notice NOLA was full of them this past weekend. A lot more than usual. Able bodied guys and gals that could be doing something productive. Obamas economy working right?
