Jaylon Smith's Tweet Could Cost Him Millions, According to Former NFL Physician
Interesting, though...
quote:
“It told me he had a nerve palsy,” he said. “I hope it’s temporary, but it could mean that he needs a ‘redshirt’ year. The early reports of no nerve damage were optimistic, so I hope he ends up okay.”
Interesting, though...
quote:
Chances are, if there’s an injury during an NFL game, you’re going to hear about it from Dr. David Chao. The 51-year-old former San Diego Chargers team doctor has cultivated an impressive following on Twitter, boasting more than 43,000 followers. His success at diagnosing injuries from afar has earned him spots on Sirius XM radio and a regular column at the National Football Post.
While Chao might just seem like a run-of-the-mill expert on sports injuries, his story is hardly that boring. Any cursory Google search could lead you to believe he was the devil incarnate, but many he has worked with over the year swear by him. So just who is this guy? The answer is far more complicated than you may think.
Chao is no stranger to controversy and that makes his new-found Twitter fame hard for some to take. During his years as the Chargers’ doctor, he cultivated relationships with a number of prominent players who back him to this day. On the flip side, he had two alcohol-related driving incidents, was subject to a DEA investigation, was reportedly sued 20 times between 1998-2011 and the NFLPA demanded he step down as a result of repeated negligence.
In 2014, Chao had his license revoked by the California Medical Board, but that sentence was stayed as part of a settlement. He is currently serving a five-year probation term instead. He was accused of “committing gross negligence, repeated negligent acts and acts of dishonesty and corruption.” He is still a practicing orthopedist and is right to quickly to point out that an independent panel of doctors unanimously cleared him of any wrongdoing in the NFLPA investigation.
quote:
Chao charts his hits and misses on Twitter when predicting injuries, he has himself at 94 percent. Despite his controversial past, he can provide value to viewers. There is no disputing his expertise in that area, he has been around the NFL long enough to identify injuries when they happen. Yes, he’s had some high-profile misses, but that’s going to happen when diagnosing from afar.
Chao says he aims to be the “medical Mike Pereira,” someone who can tell fans not only what happened, but why. His constant refrain is that he deals with “insider knowledge, not insider information.” The message being that he knows his business, but he’s not getting any leaked information from people inside the league.
“Because I’ve been inside the game, it brings a different perspective,” Chao said. I know how the league works. It’s not a carny trick, I’m experienced. It’s not 100 percent, I miss some. I’m open about that. I am doing this as a hobby, I’m still a practicing orthopedist.”

I can't remember the last time someone was drafted in the 1st that missed the entire season.
McGahee is the closest that comes to mind.
If there is a chance he could miss his first year, I don't think this staff will be above drafting him. They may trade back and take him in the late teens early 20s; but if they think he's the BPA I can see them taking the chance.

Honestly, if we're that sold on Jaylon Smith's talent... to hell with a rookie year, who cares if he misses maybe 8 games of the year. If he's that good for the next 8-10 years, we should care less. I mean was Peat's rookie year so great we couldn't live without, yes he served a purpose getting good play in needed but i mean jaylon's spot will be filled temporarily if we know he can't be depended on this year.

I mean if we are running a 4-3 defense...between Ellerbe/Tull I think we can manage to get by for a year if it means adding a potential Pro Bowler to the LB unit long term.
We have started far worse.

and kikaha, we can get by, Jaylon can step in and be a huge upgrade over one or the other following year. Him and Stephone can be a great duo for years assuming Stephone's play gets better and more meaningful.

We know his talent, it's if his knee ever returns to allow him to show case his talent. That was a bad injury and we can't afford to blow a pick on him

So we're already writing off 2016?
This may be the earliest "wait until next year" ever. (not just your post, others have said similar things)

No not necessarily. We were 7-9 and fairly competitive in most of the games we played with our worst roster in quite some time. We still need immediate help but long term best interests for our team is a decision to weigh. You are not drafting a player for 1 year but his whole rookie contract. If you think Smith will heal fine drafting him would be a stash for future seasons and would provide you a player that otherwise you will not be in position to draft again or sign in FA for the remainder of Drew's time here.
With Cam, Grant, Will Smith and others the DE position we have repeatedly been shown value is available anywhere in rounds 1-2. Von Miller, Patrick Willis, and most your elite LB'ers are usually top 10 picks.
It is easier IMO opinion to build defenses around LB'ing corps. Think about every defense that year in and year out were very respectable if not great.
Urlacher, Brooks, Ray, Kuelchly, Miller, etc when you find elite talent at LB it becomes easier to fill in everything else.

There is no way to know how he will recover from the injuries. He may never be the same.
Also, how many here would go nuts if during the draft, the Saints traded this year's #1 to a team for their next year's #1 straight up (even if it is a traditionally bad team like Cleveland)? Wouldn't that be the same as drafting a player that won't play for a year?

I dont haveaccess to his medical files nor the formal training to interpret that information. However if your medical team green lights his recovery I would pull that trigger. We also have 2 more months to get more updates to see how he is progressing and responding.

Man, we are talking about a historically bad defense that couldn't stop the run, pressure the passer, or stop the pass. We were only reasonably competitive b/c we have a HOF quarterback who by the way, ain't getting any younger.
A defense with this many holes can't afford to take a chance on a first round pick that may not play or worse, may not recover.
I just don't follow the logic at all.
Now, if Dr. Andrews says he's gonna be fine by September, maybe you reconsider. Tearing an ACL and MCL is not a quick recovery.

Well, at least the hype train will stop

Man that sucks for him.
Can he re-apply for the draft next year?

Take him in the second if still there. The talent is worth the redshirt year at that spot.

not liking the news coming out on him today at all.
Oh well if Dodd runs a 4.6 40 or better im pimping that train till draft day.
Rankins if he can run 4.85 or better.

What makes smith so great? Didn't watch a whole lot of ND this year because im a student so my Saturday's aren't spent watching slate of games unfortunately. His stats suggest he's a tackling machine with 1 sack.
