have heard good things about Lowa boots however I have never worn them.

It's what I wear but they are just 1 of many good brands out there.

Lowa's just happened to fit my feet the best.

I bought a pair of keen boots almost 2 yrs ago. Wear them daily. Most comfortable footwear I've ever owned.

Keen mid height, wide boot

Best boots IMO are Vasque boots with Gortex.

If you arent going to be doing some heavy backpacking, then I dont think it really matters.

If you were going to get into heavy weights and extended hiking trips/hunting trips, then Meindl, Lowa or Vasque are the boots I would go with. My Meindl's are indestructable. I take care of them and I feel they will last for at least 5 years of heavy backpacking.

If you are only thinking about going on light day hikes without much weight then a mid boot/trail shoe would be a good bet. It depends on how long you want to get out of them.

For about the highest quality medium weight mid boot on the market within your price range, I would look at the Lowa Renegade GTX Mid. This one would be light enough to do active trail running/walking but tough enough with a good enough sole to support a load if you decide to transition into heavier hiking.
These Meindl Nebraska Mid's would be a really nice cheaper alternative.

Keens are definitely a good boot. I wear them for work currently.

Last year I couldn't find my Lowa Renegades (had just moved) so I wore my steel toed Keens on a backpacking/climbing trip. Never missed a beat. Only difference was just a bit more weight.

I've put mine through hell and they are going on 3 years. Best boot I've ever owned.

A couple of things:

1) I know what you mean about not finding shoes in stores to try on. I buy a lot shoes online from Zappo's. They have free shipping both ways. I've bought about 20 pairs of shoes from them, and returned all by 4 or 5, just keeping the ones I wanted. No problems.

2) I used a pair of Merrell Moab Ventilators (low) for hiking for about 2 years. Extremely comfortable and breathable. After the treads wore out, I converted them to my grass cutting shoes.

3) I just bought the Keen Koven Mid WP's a few weeks ago. They are comfortable, but don't breathe as well as the Merrells, probably because of the waterproofing. Most mid's are waterproof, so you'll want to keep that in mind.

4) Another brand you might want to look at is Oboz. I didn't try any of them, but they look good.

5) Check out REI for discounts too.

Danner Grouse is the bomb.com

a bit over your price range though.

if you sign up for the Breakroom, they will send weekly emails with great deals on off models of Danner.

That's what I've always worn. Once you break them in, they're the GOAT.

Meh....I think you can say the same for a number of boots. Matter of preference and fit.

I really wanted to own Asolo's, heard awesome things but they just don't lock my heel in and would only cause me blisters.
Doesn't make it a bad boot, it's just not a good boot for me.

Mrs Cove wears those. They don't fit me right either.

Backpacker has a good selection, Massey's also carries Salewa boots. They won't have them in BR, but you can call ahead and have your size brought in from the NOLA area stores or Covington for no charge. Bit of a stretch but I have not once heard a bad review on the Salewa boots, they won gear of the year pretty recently. Definitely worth a look. They have a no blister guarantee on them, goretex or non waterproof, and very durable shoes.

River Outfitters in Monroe may still sell Vasque boots. I bought a pair and love them. Great boot.

Hiking boots are something you really need to try on several to find the right fit for you. Salomons are real nice, especially if you like a high top boot, but their cut is really narrow. Timberland's are nowhere near the quality they used to be and in my opinion are crap (just my opinion). Merrels are good once you get to their upper models. My personal favorite is Keen. Their cut is real wide in the toe box which is something I desperately need.

As many have said already, Backpacker in BR is a good place to check. Most would assume that they would have a high markup on prices, but they really don't. They just don't sell cheap crap.

Just to follow up, nothing there but cowboy boots(along with other western wear).

Lots of pretty babes though.

Also went to River Outfitters on Tower Dr. They were still in the process of opening up but looked very small. Roughly 30 ft by 40 ft area. Not impressive at all.

I like Gortex but only if I really need it (serious backcountry or winter). Way too hot otherwise.

I hike in Vasque Grand Traverses at the moment.
