Huh?
All engineer, Mathematician, etc can pass medical school courses. Medical school students can't all pass advanced mathematics.
Ask around, the hard part is getting into medical school, not passing it. But there are plenty of spots in engineering and math...because so many try and flunk out.

Sounds about right. I got about 3K a year in pell grants iirc. Once I transferred to LSU I didn't have a scholarship anymore (that was only to NLU), so what wasn't covered by pell grants...I took out student loans for(books, fees, etc). Usually had a small amount left over to maybe pay my car insurance for the semester or something like that.

More whites than blacks are in food stamps. Or is the white chock named Laquanda in your scenario.
Obviously, there are more white people, but look at what percentage of the black population are on food stamps compared to whites.
LINK
In East Baton Rouge Parish 3% of the white residents use a SNAP/EBT card compared to 32% fro black residents.
Orleans Parish is the same,
Caddo Parrish it is 7% white and 35% of blacks.

you don't have to be intelligent to be a doctor or teacher.
I disagree, but at the very least I can ask you to excel in your field. I'd you want an arts degree, fine, but you better maintain a 3.5 GPA.
2.5 is fricking embarrassing for a merit based scholarship.

Wow that's shocking and terrible. Making more restrictions on the qualifications to earn TOPS, sure I'd agree with. But this is just lunacy. I wouldn't have been able to go to LSU without TOPS. That program was one of the best things the state had going for it.

Patrick Taylor would be ashamed
He would have been ashamed the second they expanded TOPS to include anyone outside of Orleans parish public schools.

True, but I teach Pre-calc and I have a lot of students in the 26-30 ACT range and 3.5-4.0 GPA range. Some of them won't quality for other scholarships like they would with TOPS.
This mentality is part of the problem. Not everybody is entitled to a scholarship and it isn't the state's responsibility to provide one. Only the absolute best and brightest should be qualified to receive state money for education.

If anyone believes we are in the position we are in because of Jindal and not because of the oil crash then you probably shouldn't waste your time in college to begin with.

of course
It was a tangent, I just want to oppose slackster.
Law school isn't hard, the bar is
medical school isn't hard, getting in is
Engineering is hard, but easy after you graduate(computers do everything)

Do you want to talk about percent of population?
Which has what to do with total dollars spent? It's irrelevant in a budget crisis scenario.

Isn't stopping TOPS sort of the opposite of socialism?
I honestly do not see it that way when it is earned and not given. And there are incentives within this system based on merit, not on having more children.

When longtime CBS newsman Mike Wallace featured Mr. Taylor with the “Taylor’s Kids” on a 60 Minutes segment in September 1989, Mr. Taylor’s mission took on a national scope, as other states called wondering how to implement a similar program. That same year, Mr. Taylor convinced New Mexico to enact a version of the “Taylor Plan” program. In 1990, Texas, Florida, and Indiana voted for state-paid college tuition assistance programs for their children. In 2010, Alaska became the 23rd state to enact a “Taylor Plan.”

Couldn't it be a little of both? There was a surplus of $ when Jindal took office and now there is not. Louisiana citizens sure paid for him to be out of town a lot.

I was valedictorian with a 4.0 and 30 ACT. The only scholarship I received was a $1000 scholarship from LSU my freshman year. I applied for at least 20 scholarships. Needless to say, TOPS saved my broke arse in college.

Undergrad degrees aren't worthless
Unless you're in engineering, construction management, accounting, or a major that traces you a skill, then yes, they generally are.

If your parents are teachers or policemen you get your student loans forgiven.

You do realize that a 26+ is in the top 90 percentile

This is hilarious. I'm sure med school is at least as hard as dental school, and dental school is more than a full time job. You're generally in class from 8 am to 5 pm most days, then have hours of lab work and studying once the school day ends. And there are certain hand skills required that not everyone can master. And this is compared to a 2-3 hour class day for engineering and the like. And you don't need to simply "pass" - competition for residencies is fierce, and it's between the elite of the elite. Engineering generally attracts that "second tier" of student - guys who are intelligent rather than elite. Of course you'll have some of the elite high school students going into engineering - but it's not the norm like it is for medical professions. Solid troll though.
