I graduated the same year. I had an old truck and had to work 30 hours a week while taking classes. It sucked but I got a Stafford loan and made it through. The following years at LSU I watched as freshman showed up in luxury cars because they didn't have to pay for school and burnt through the money their parents saved.

TOPS is a nice to have. The problem is the state had too much riding on oil being 65 dollars a barrel then elected a guy that ran on no substance and no plan to fix anything. Everyone put down jindal for cutting higher education when the problem is the constitution of this state and the reps who put their pork into it. I forsee Edwards being one of the worst Governors this state will ever have. He is in way over his head.

Are you going to demand welfare recipients be drug tested?

This is probably the only time I've ever agreed with Rouge.

I know 3 guys who are/were river boat pilots and they live(d) a good life.

Well, I do feel bad for those that were counting on it.

TBH, sometimes these programs have unintended economic consequences.

Lol so "what other state offers free tuition if someone meets the criteria?" is really what other states have the same exact requirements that TOPS has?

Without tops, some of our brightest students won't get the chance to succeed..you stop this program, kids go from potential doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers etc, to being stuck in the plants or McDonald's

This is completely fabricated. TOPS creates a bubble for mediocre students in LA, plain and simple. The elite students will be fine. They'll get merit-based aid.

Granted, those kids currently get TOPS, but that hole will be filled just like it is everywhere else.

Hopefully this stunt gets the qualifications more in line with a true merit based scholarship.

I don't have a problem paying for doctors or teachers going to school, but I want elite doctors and teachers, not 24 ACT and 2.5 college GPA students. Sorry.

Eh, didn't have TOPS when I went to LSU.

Took out loans to cover what scholarship didn't cover.

Graduated, got a job, worked hard and paid them off.

Students won't owe anything until the semester is over. By that time it could be fixed resulting in them oweing nothing

How ironic. The people that bitched about the governor giving "free rides" to the needy are now bitching because he cut out their "free ride".

You had to take out loans to cover 2600/year in tuition? And you had scholarships? Why didn't you just get a part time job?

Yet he is possibly stopping a somewhat socialist program

In a way I suppose. But you still had to earn TOPS. Its not just a handout and it was tiered as an incentive to have a better GPA. You know what I meant by socialist.

I teach mostly seniors at a pretty good high school just outside of Baton Rouge. It really sucks for my some of my students who work their arse off to get one of the higher levels of TOPS, only to have it possibly be not offered in a few months when they graduate.

It's not like they are working their arse off for nothing. They are increasing their GPA and adding to the chance that they will get a scholarship. TOPS is an insane program that no other state is dumb enough to endorse. In Texas you have to be top 10% (average of 3.8 GPA) just to GET IN to a decent university, much less receive tuition money or scholarships. Freshman year I was on $8000 scholarship which was enough to cover out of state and a little more while my suite mates had their whole tuition paid for and had much lower ACT and GPA scores than I did. I've always wondered how this was feasible. While students may be used to the additional state funds, this is a smart way for the state to cut spending.
