I will admit that tuition and school expenses were not nearly as expensive back then though(even allowing for inflation). Wonder how much the TOPS program has played into LA colleges jacking up their tuition since they knew kids get TOPS money?

How much was tuition at LSU back in 1997?

TOPS is way too expensive and inclusive of too many students. Higher standards should be set across the board for scholarship money.

This I wholeheartedly agree with. Whenever I got LSU, I was astounded by what qualifications you needed to receive the lowest scholarship. You mean to tell me that these are the requirements to become eligible, a 2.5 GPA and a 20 ACT score? Call it whatever, but if you are a mid-C average student in high school, then you by no means should earn any sort of scholarship to college.

You know how much liberals in this state were bitching that it was merit based instead of income based? The kids that will be hurt won't be the poor there are countless federal programs to help them. The people that will be hurt are the children of lower middle class families.

How ironic. The people that bitched about the governor giving "free rides" to the needy are now bitching because he cut out their "free ride".

Is there another NIMBY type word for this? NIMMIS not if my money is stopped

What this means is that thousands of students like me will have to take out loans with astronomical interest rates to get a degree after being lured to stay with the promise of free to little tuition.

Thousands of students like you? There aren't thousands of students in LA colleges with 4.2 GPAs and 34 ACTs. You're either lying, delusional, or both.

I'll safely assume it is both.

I find it funny that so many of you don't realize the original idea behind TOPS to begin with.

2663 for tuition and fees for in state tuition. For the year. So about 25% of what it is today.

It's not like they are working their arse off for nothing. They are increasing their GPA and adding to the chance that they will get a scholarship. TOPS is an insane program that no other state is dumb enough to endorse.

True, but I teach Pre-calc and I have a lot of students in the 26-30 ACT range and 3.5-4.0 GPA range. Some of them won't quality for other scholarships like they would with TOPS.

Agreed. Doesnt change the fact that we have now elected an ultra liberal Dem.

If we are going to be swimming in shite regardless, I would prefer it not be with a Democrat.

ETA: no pun intended.

Google the Hope scholarship.

Also Tenn and Oregon are starting up programs that give free tuition to ANYONE who graduates high school
