Very exciting stuff. Watch them go back to the old way of 5 classes, and have 5 private schools win each classification in football.

to be fair, the split passed without needing a single vote in class B or C

The "unfair" advantage that private schools have of recruiting players from all over.

Let all schools bring in regional kids like private schools can then. Its not fair private school can draw from nearby areas when public can draw only from district.

so why didn't they just change the rule to let the public schools bring in kids from the same area as privates?

It's really just a couple private schools that really pissed people off, John Curtis and Evangel. The main reason is that they were playing in 2A and winning every single year.

Pretty easy solution is for John Curtis and Evangel to play up to 5A. Well what do you know, the split happens and both schools play up to the new "Division 1 - Select" division so now they're playing with the big boys like everyone wanted. And guess who hasn't won the state championship since playing up in the last 2 years? JC and Evangel.

A. all the private and Catholic schools became scapegoats for Curtis and Evangel being in class 2A with 5A quality football teams.

B. there are legitimate issues with attendance zones allowing Chalmette residents to attend Brother Martin, but not allowing Gentilly residents to attend Chalmette and so on throughout the state.

C. Per student, most of the LHSAA's voting power is concentrated in rural small public schools. For example, West Monroe has the same single vote as Central of Jonesville

what has been done

A. Curtis and Evangel both requested to play up to class 5A at the last reclassification

B. LHSAA attendance zones became the parish a school is located in, even if the local school board still enforces theirs

C. Big changes that can be driven by that imbalance of power now need to go before the executive committee

what needs to be done

A. Eddie Bonine needs to be the final authority on what classifications teams play at, in case a school pops up with disproportionate results like Curtis in 2A, etc.

B. Statewide open enrollment, but this is not up to the LHSAA and is complicated by pending desegregation lawsuits. School districts should still be able to refuse out of district students they don't want

C. A tiered voting system which gives a bit more power to the bigger schools, such that 5A has a voice commensurate with the influence they wield on the LHSAA in general

To be fair Evangel has played in and won championships in 5A before the split. They never wanted to drop down.

what happened before the vote reflects directly on the outcome of the vote itself. The B and C schools were cornered and it was clear that they were going to vote in favor of the split. So some schools that were on the fence voted to split because they wanted to stay with the majority. I know this for a fact.

They just need to do like Alabama has done. Count private school enrollment at 1.5x per student.

New Orleans is mostly charter schools now, and their district is the entire city. Schools like Karr, Landry-Walker, Warren Easton are in prime position to dominate.

their own problem

they didn't want to face the privates in the playoffs then... as I understand it... the privates didn't want to pay the fees to play them in the regular season

the publics created this mess

It's been discussed before. Use a system like Indiana has:

quote:

In team sports, schools shall be subject to reclassification at the conclusion of a
reclassification period on a sport-by-sport basis dependent on the school’s
tournament series success during the previous reclassification period.

I thought it was really funny that the Barbe principal complained about Rummel being able to recruit after they lost to them in the football championship and then that spring their baseball team fielded a brand new senior pitcher that transferred in from 2.5 hours away.
