Mike Bianchi: Bobby Bowden better than both Nick Saban and Bear Bryant

The debate du jour in the wake of Alabama's thrilling 45-40 national championship victory over Clemson is the constant, chronic yammering on whether Nick Saban has surpassed Bear Bryant as the greatest college football coach in history.
In my mind, Saban has easily eclipsed the Bear, but not as the greatest college football coach of all-time.
Call me a State of Florida homer if you want, but I still maintain Bobby Bowden is the greatest college football coach to ever prowl the sidelines. Granted, Bear has six national titles, Saban has five and Bowden only has two. But Bowden has more overall victories and did something Bryant, Saban and Joe Paterno never did.
quote:
Bobby has meant more to Florida State than the Bear ever meant to Alabama; more than JoePa has meant to Penn State; more than any coach has ever meant to any school.
The reason is simple: Alabama football thrived before the Bear ever arrived. The Crimson Tide won national titles and appeared in Rose Bowls under coaches like Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas. Before Paterno arrived at Penn State, legendary former coach Rip Engle had a 104-48 record and never had a losing season.
But before Bobby, Florida State football was an embarrassing quagmire of Cigar Bowl bids, chicken wire scandals and losing seasons. There was even talk of shutting down football.
And now look at where the Seminoles are. Still competing for national championships long after Bobby retired.

He's way better than Saban. He finished the regular season with 1 loss(usually Miami) several times and didn't get to play for a title.
His record at West Virginia is a lot better than Saban's at Michigan St too

I do think an argument could be made. Didn't they have something like 13 consecutive top 4 finishes at one point?
And prior to his arrival FSU wasn't anywhere near the historic program that Alabama was.
And he did a good enough job branding them to where his successor has been able to have sustained success.
People often cite that the ACC is weak but he did have to play both Florida and Miami out of conference every year. The only Florida school that has the other 2 power 5 Florida schools on the schedule every year. Say what you will, but he's got a pretty impressive track record.

FSU's run was stupid impressive, but no. Saban is tGOAT.

Bear Bryant called the state of Florida a sleeping giant in the '60s. What happened with UF and FSU was in a way inevitable.
Taking nothing away from Bowden, but it's not like he made a perennial power out of South Dakota

Bowden's the reason FSU is a relevant brand nowadays. As far as on the field success goes. I'd take Saban over him.

No..Saban has IMO established himself as the best College coach of all time. 5 championships at 2 different schools with modern scholarship restrictions, increased competition on the national front while playing in the toughest division in football pretty much settles the debate for me. The man has 5 National championships in his last 11 seasons as a college coach..unbelievable.
