re: Do You Agree Corporal Punishment (Spanking) Is Barbaric When You Think About It?

when has understanding this ever been a bad thing?
at the end of the day, violence is power. this will also be true tomorrow, in 100 years, and in 1,000,000 years

I got my arse whipped alot as a kid. I deserved it every single time. I thank my Dad for it on occasion to this day. I was mischievous and pretty intelligent as a child and would occasionally "poke the bear" to see what I could get away with. No belt was needed, just a bare hand on my bare arse and I learned a lesson. That lesson would not have been learned by being put on my knees with my nose touching the wall for 30 mins (another form of punishment that my parents chose depending on the severity of my frickup). As I got older, I matured and didnt want the embarrassment of getting my arse whipped in front of my friends. Being scared of that embarrassment is what deterred alot of shite. No, I wasnt a deviant. I was raised in the country, was a straight A student all through school, and was heavily involved in athletics. I wasnt out trying to boost cars or shoplifting or shite like that. I wasnt doing that because I was raised properly by great parents. They even cared enough about me to whip my arse when I needed. Imagine that.

TL:DR, Not surprised at the like-dislike ratio

i think you raise a very valid point
the biggest issue with a lax societal policy on corporal punishment is that plenty of assholes will take it WAY too far and will defend it to the death b/c they will treat their kids like some sort of twisted property that deserves to be beaten

Someone with your intelligence shouldn't have kids.

You all can give all the anecdotal evidence that you want. But the research is pretty clear. Research consistently shows that mild corporal punishment past the age of three or so, while reinforcing to the parents because it works in the very short term, leads to increases in aggressive behavior and other problems. Please feel free to downvote the facts.
The two most violent and misbehaved children I've ever witnessed are the offspring of two parents who refuse to lay a hand on them, and instead try reasoning with them every time they misbehave.
At a gathering a few months ago, one of these kids (about 5 or 6 years old) literally put another kid in a choke hold. The parent of the other kid had to run to the rescue. The "corrective action" taken was putting the kid in timeout for 5 minutes and then having one of those "let's talk it out" meetings afterward. Based on the kid's current behavior, I'd say it didn't work very well.
The most well-behaved kids I know get spanked.
So you can keep your research. I'll keep my anecdotes and personal life observations.

I'd be genuinely interested in seeing some of the research you are referencing.

The way I see it, everybody takes a beating sometime.

Spanking does not equal beating.

As your children near the age of reason, it is probably not a good idea to use corporal punishment.
My experience roughly lines up with the "3 year old or so" evidence. Before that, though, it is sometimes necessary for some children. Also, kids are unique, and what one can understand at 3 years old may not be the same for another.

I saw a woman holding a child last night at a strip mall. The kid was maybe 1-1.5 yrs old. The kid kind of slapped her in the face playing. The woman grabbed the kids hand and told him to stop and he did it again and just laughed about it as she strapped him in his car seat. I looked at my kids and told them "that's what is wrong with the world today." A slap on the wrist with a slight sting to let him know he did wrong would be the proper way to handle this situation.
Kids need to be taught by a reward/punishment system. The kid needs to learn "if I do that again, I get slapped on the wrist". Once he figures that out, he will be a better behaved child.

It's a pretty simple concept. If your toddler can learn life lessons with no slaps on the wrist or diaper, that's great, but it's not typical.

Pretty big jump from spanking to ISIS. I was never spanked as a child because I was a good kid, very quiet and shy really. Now my brother is a different story, but he could be a little shite sometimes. It's not like he got spanked every time he did a little something wrong - but sometimes he needed and deserved it IMO.

How do you know what the barbarians did?
quote:
"old school"
Since when has "old school" automatically meant that something is bad. 2+2=4 is old school. It appears that the political correct crowd has made this term a bad thing and lump what they don't like into a term. It is just a method of whipping the ignorant masses into line.
quote:
I don't see any difference in that and the way ISIS treats their enemies; only a barbaric loser will hit or kick a human/animal when it doesn't do what they want.
A very ignorant and condescending statement. This leads me to believe OP is young and inexperienced or trolling us.
quote:
I know a lot of people were spanked when they were younger, but have we finally realized the absolute stone-age barbarism in that?
I was spanked and realized how well it worked so I used it as well when deemed necessary.
quote:
LOL if you spank your kids; you're taking your frustration out on them probably because you're poor.
quote:
verb (used with object), frustrated, frustrating.
1. to make (plans, efforts, etc.) worthless or of no avail; defeat; nullify:
The student's indifference frustrated the teacher's efforts to help him.
2. to disappoint or thwart (a person):
a talented woman whom life had frustrated.
verb (used without object), frustrated, frustrating.
3. to become frustrated :
His trouble is that he frustrates much too easily.
adjective
4. Obsolete. frustrated.
Whats the point on this? If not for an amount of frustration there would be no need to move to that advanced step.
As for me being poor, I wasn't anywhere close too poor. Even back then I could have bought OP for what they think they are worth and sold him for what he is really worth without doing great damage to my checking account.
The end result of my barbaric actions is 3 young men all graduating from college with excellent grades AND they still love me. They even spank their kids when necessary.
Conclusion: OP is troll or knows about as much about child rearing as a cheerleader knows about abstinence.

I beat the shite out of my wife and kids
Posted on 1/8/16 at 12:25 pm to LOL
I figured out around 8 years old or so that spanking was preferable to grounding or taking away toys/privileges. Few minutes of pain vs weeks of punishment? Give me the the quick pain every time and I'll be back doing the stupid shite that got me in trouble real fast. Its a lazy cop out that isn't effective in my mind.

The Bible even says to beat your kids. "Spare the rod..."
