That's one of the worst trailers I've ever seen. Why is there no music? And the lightsabers don't have color - had they not finished the special effects rendering upon release of the trailer?
Given that the special effects were the ground-breaking feature requiring so much time and effort, it's pretty easy to accept that a trailer released in 1976 (a year beforehand) wouldn't be as polished.
Also keep in mind- the effects shown in that trailer were still way ahead of anything else up to that point. People born after that time simply have no conception of what things were like. The previous pinnacles of space flight depiction were static shots of models with a black backdrop (sometimes with little pinhole lights for stars), or, at best, a slow crawl.
Nothing had ever been seen like the Tie Fighters going across the screen while Luke and Han tracked them with the turret guns. That was phenomenal at the time.
Also, the sound effects were inspired. I remember the documentary on that, where they had a sound tech recording as someone hit a steel cable; that "plunk" noise was used as blaster fire. There were just so many never-before moments in that film

the camping out in lines in costumes, etc was for empire and jedi

I was ten. I went with my neighbor. This was the first movie the two of us were allowed to see by ourselves. That must have been a big deal, but I do not recall why we wanted to see it. To this day, that was the most blown away I have ever been after a movie.

Did people have any idea that Vader was Luke's father? Was the theory floated around before ESB?

There is a great documentary called Empire of Dreams that shows the whole making of the original trilogy. Its amazing at first no one really wanted to even make it and even the actors thought it was going to be a piece of crap. It was included with the special features in the DVD set but I'm sure you can find it online. It was very good.

no,took a girl to the drive-in, figured it was a movie I wouldn't mind missing most of, if you know what I mean, still missed most of it but saw enough to know I wanted to come back to to actually watch it.

i dont recall wondering that myself, however there was no internet so 11 year old me would have little knowledge of what other people's theories were. when empire came out, that scene was a complete shock to me and my friends

Since Obi Wan told Luke that Vader had killed his father, it was a shock to everyone that I knew that Vader was Luke's dad.
I think that most people were focusing on where the sequels would go towards the future, and didn't realize that they would answer any questions from the past. We didn't learn anything about Han, Leia, or Chewie in the original sequels. The Luke thing was out of the blue.

There was a type of evangelism surrounding Star Wars that I've never seen in a movie before or since.
Back in '77, it wasn't enough to just see Star Wars. You wanted to tell everyone you knew to go see Star Wars. Like, NOW.
I grew up in the sticks, so I actually didn't get to see Star Wars until about six months after it was released, but I knew all about it. When I finally saw it, it blew my mind. I had never seen anything like that before. I knew, even at a young age, that I was seeing one of the hallmark movies in history, like the Wizard of Oz or Gone With the Wind.
Star Wars was literally all we talked about on the playground at school for like, a year afterward.
With regard to Empire Strikes Back, Vader's reveal was spoiled on opening night. As soon as one kid saw it... the school exploded with the news. We were all like NOOO WAYYY!!

It was the end of my Junior year and the people that saw it before me had mixed levels of understanding. One girl thought that R2 was a pet, like a dog.

I had a friend in college ruin the Darth Dad thing. He told me he could ruin the film for me, I said I didn't want to know, he said it had to do with Luke's dad, I said he's dead, he said he's not, I said, it had better not be Darth Vader, and he laughed.

Most of the SAG thought it was going to be one of the biggest flops of all time.
Such a shame all the union BS and that Speilburg couldn't direct the ROTJ. He was the only one who could see the initial brilliance of it.

I don't remember the leadup but it dominated the entire summer like nothing recently. There wasn't any big release 2 weeks later or 2 months later to push it off its screens.

Return of the Jedi was crazy.
Just because Empire Strikes Back was so awesome.
Our parents allowed us to play hookie from school and we went on opening day - and this is back when you had one GIANT theater screen - and nothing else - and the line was around the block double-time...but the theater was huge so we got in....but it took about an hour to buy your ticket.
It was like waiting in line for the old Louvre or Space Mountain in the 80's.
Just because Empire Strikes Back was so awesome.

I don't think so. It certainly didn't enter into my very young head at that point.
Think about how different the way we talk about and share information about movies is today. We weren't yet even in the era of widespread VCRs and VHS tapes so even watching the movies as often as you might like was more challenging for most people.
There was no internet for the public so therefore there was no youtube or reddit to dissect the films. Certainly, people did watch the movies over and over again, and talk about them forever on teh playgrounds etc, but that kind of organic experience lended itself more to bullshite and speculation than a real analysis.

I was very young. My "screen" experience was an 18" dial tuned tube tv with bunny ears and we were pumped if Rocky snd Bulwinkle, Felix the cat, and looney tunes came in clear on Saturday morning.
We went to Star Wars at the drive in. Behind the screen was a night sky full of stars. When that huge cruiser ship came in seemingly over our head, it felt like it lasted forever. It seemed real. That memory is burned in my brain. Incredible compared to anything I had seen before.
