It was good, but it was totally unoriginal. Just a straight up ripoff of episode 4. Though I'd still watch it again. The prequels were better stories and I don't get the hate for them.

Ya just don't get it, do ya? You don't.

It's entirely flawed and incredibly dangerous to yield. He wants Anakin/Luke's saber not only because it was his idol's, but because the design is flawless. He has not figured this out and his lightsaber's flaws piss him off greatly.

Man, you are in denial. Studio execs wanted a "cool looking lightsaber" so they added some odds and ends on. Had they consulted people who understand how swords (and even lightsabers to a point) work, they could have had something plausible.

But they made a cool looking toy no more practical than some of the ridiculous vehicles from G.I.Joe.

That was kind of the entire point of the character.
He is a troubled young man who is trying to figure out just who he is. The early scene of him losing control of his emotions and lashing out with his light sword, it's not a sabre, should be more than enough of a clue that Kylo Ren has issues. Criticizing how the character is developed is one thing, but the gratuitous nitpicking about his physical appearance is pretty lame.

They needed an actor who will mature in physical appearance as the saga progresses. It made sense to choose someone just entering adulthood for the role.

His physical appearance will be just like Anakin's evolution into Darth.

I don't give a shite if the execs wanted an even more badass lightsaber. The point is they made its design highly organic to the character and to tell us something about him. Darth Maul's double bladed lightsaber told us nothing about the character. If JJ was instructed to make a new badass lightsaber and came up with this, the kudos to him. My point still stands.

JJ could take a shite in your mouth and you'd smile and say it tasted like chocolate. You've lost all objectivity.

You have to explain away every valid criticism. And poorly.

What is your deal? No matter what they do they'll make billions off the merchandising. But to act like TFA is some masterpiece is utterly asinine.

the fricking lazer freeze was legit as hell.

Spoilers

Did anyone but me think he was going to drag the guy who shot that in front of it then unfreeze it so he would have killed himself?

At that time I didn't know that was a character that was going to be around long.

It is an all-around fun movie that starts a new enjoyable trilogy. I thought it was great.

If someone was unable to enjoy it, that is on them, not the filmmaker, IMO.

The film critic at L’Osservatore Romano—the daily newspaper at the Vatican, an institution with nearly two thousand years experience in being disinterested in popular trends—has helpfully provided a litany of complaints about the film.

The latest Star Wars, writes Emilio Renzato, is “modeled on the sloppiest current action films derived from the world of video games. The only merit of J.J. Abrams’ film is to show, by contrast, how the direction of the previous films was elegant, balanced and above all appropriate,” he writes.

Renzato went on to slam the films’ use of computer-generated imagery, calling it “the clumsiest and tackiest result you can obtain from computer graphics.” He also derided the villains Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke ineffectual, complaining that they both failed “most spectacularly” as representations of evil—a stinging rebuke from an entity engaged on a daily basis in spiritual warfare against the forces of evil.

Into Darkness was PC bullshite and he should have played it much more straight forward than he did. He has done it here. He didn't for a second assume that the audience would be dumb enough not to know Kylo Ren was Han and Leia's kid and Rey being Luke's. It is all but confirmed. I love LOST, but JJ had little to do with it besides the Pilot and closing shot.

It's flawed, which the OT is as well, but it's everything it needed to be to reboot the franchise. As far as a soft reboot is a concerned, it's pretty much flawless. This is a huge investment on Disney, and they had to have an opening product that put the faith back in the franchise with the fans, all while introducing likable new characters and making it familiar to the audience. In the next movies, they'll take more chances and put the Star Wars mythos to a new and unprecedented level the series hasn't been before. It was everything I was hoping for, and expect Episode VIII to be equal or as good as Empire. This wasn't, but it didn't need to be either. It was exactly the film it needed to be.

Do you have any evidence to support this assertion? Or is this something you feel to be true?

It needed to be a rehash of ANH?

How so?

First off the script has gotten very high praise from everyone who has read it. Secondly it's the second act, which should be the darkest and most unpredictable. The second act's only goal is to bring drama and our characters to their lowest point, which makes it less formulaic and unpredictable. And they know how much we like how unorthodox Empire was, and Disney is good at handling fan reactions. As many problems as I have with Ultron, it's clear they took some of the feedback from Man of Steel to manipulate the script to the fans liking. That was a miscalculation, but Disney is pretty rare at this.

Because we got so much shite from the prequels that didn't feel like Star Wars that it pissed everyone else. The best thing to do is to give us the familiar plot of A New Hope, give us the stakes of Empire, and give us energetic new characters to attach ourselves to. That's all the movie needed to do to reestablish the franchise, and it entirely succeeded.

I really don't understand how anyone could "hate" this movie. It's a good movie. It may not have met some people's unrealistic expectations, but I don't see how people could say it was a bad movie.

I'm new to the fandom. Hadn't seen a star wars movie until a month ago. I thought TFA was the second best movie of the 7

That may be an unpopular opinion around here, but I'm with you. The Empire Strikes Back was to only one I thought was better.
