First, I am not a father myself.
The question is about something my old man has said to me many times over the last few years regarding having children. I personally want children and most likely will, as most do. I imagine it is one of the coolest feelings for us guys (at least for those of us who aren't tPOS.) My father, however, has reiterated to me many times that I am crazy for wanting to have children. I guess in retrospect he would have chosen not to, although he doesn't regret us obviously. I certainly don't take any offense when he says that either; it's understandable. Not exactly sure what his reasoning is other than some obvious reasons, but he has also been dealt a pretty shitty hand in some respects. And in all fairness, my dad has been a very good father to me and my siblings. Ive always considered him a bit radical yet very logical. Like when he offered to pay for me to get a vasectomy on my 18th birthday and freeze the kiddos, to insure no surprises.

So the question is: as fathers, would you tell your son that having children is overrated? Or that you don't recommend it in retrospect, knowing what you know now? Just wanted to know how many of you felt similarly. I know there will be a mixed bag.

My son is the reason I strive to be my best day in and day out. He's the best thing that ever happened to me, with his mother a close second.

All is forgiven my son.

Thank you for seeking advice from me.

Yeah, he definitely regretted having you or your siblings. One of you were a mistake.

My son changed my life.

I would be dead without him.

Fact.

And I cherish everyday with him

You held your dad back from being gay. He resented you for it.

Not necessarily true. Could have regretted them both.

No, it's quite the opposite. It's truly sad that your father is a miserable person when it comes to the aspect of parenting.

It's the greatest "gift" a responsible adult can receive.

Oddly enough I was his first and I was the mistake, yet we are super close.

he definitely does not regret us.

Being a father is awesome

It's the most difficult but rewarding thing you'll ever do

I've got a 3 year old, 18 month old, and another one on the way

My nights generally belong to getting toddlers fed, bathed, and in bed but it really is so rewarding

This post made me sad.

No, I'll never tell my sons that having children was a mistake. Good lord. Being a dad is awesome.

Seems a bit extreme, but I can see he missed out on something he dreamed about, job, travel, etc. Kids are expensive, and can be a pain in the arse. I think having one would satisfy. I have three under five, fwiw.

Son, why do you insist on airing our family business in online forums? You are a constant pain in my arse and a horrible son. I wish you had never been born.

feels awesome at times, but it is a labor of love... 3am feedings and diaper changes aren't the greatest thing, but when they recognize you and smile and start cooing and shite.... it's worth it then...

i will say only have them if you really want them... if not, it's probably not something you would really want to get into....
