Crawfish are too big and there are too many of them. $4.99 a pound under these dire conditions.

They will find an excuse.
We had a lot of rain/water, but it wasn't the right kind of water conducive for a good crawfish season.
$6.99/lb

Don't worry, the water will be too high except in places where there's not enough water. The days will be too hot, the nights will be too cold, and the fuel prices will be too low which will, in turn, cause more LA residents to be laid off which will increase demand, thus increasing the price. Don't forget the inevitable bait price that will skyrocket around January.

Damn all these crawfish farmers and their malicious machinations designed to somehow upend the normal market forces of supply and demand!!! They must be conspiring in some Cajun cartel.

You can't honestly believe that.

Bigger crawfish mean heavier crawfish which means more fuel consumption...expect a big price increase

If it never gets cold, the crawfish are going to bury early. So we wont have crawfish supply by February. Sucks.

They will never be crazy low because demand is so high now. Not sure why people dont understand this. I see more places with crawfish in my little area of Houston than I did when in b.r. Every little bar has them plus 3 or 4 places where you can drive up to a little shack and pick them up.

The conditions were so good for the first brood that it spawned a race of Super Crawfish, which cannibalized all of the other crawfish and led to shortages.

You mean to tell me that economics isn't a strong suit for your average OT poster? I don't believe you. I just saw a thread in which a lot of posters were showing off their macroeconomic analysis muscle.

The warm weather has reduced the oxygen content in the water, so yes, you are correct.
Look for prices to be a bit higher than last year.

This exact thread appeared last year.
ETA: This was last year's excuse:
quote:
On WWl, this morning, they said that increased crawfish prices, especially for processed tail meat, will be partially due to new government guidelines which mandate that "guest workers" be paid a minimum wage of $12.35 an hour.

But then we get to eat Super Crawfish.

Don't you worry. The pea brains will still be in here whining when it's 38 degrees and they want crawfish over Mardi Gras weekend.

Just hyping up a sales pitch for the run before Memorial Day and good Friday, where at that time the crawfish will be scarce because the water is too high, that way they can keep the price up. Then all of a sudden after Easter, the crawfish will be running good the price drops.
Happens every year.
Happens every year.

Does this mean I can get Louisiana crawfish tails for under $36/lb this year in Colorado?
