how/why are the walkers pounding on the walls of Alexandria? We know that they basically just wander around aimlessly until something (noise, food, etc.) grabs their attention and the react to/follow it.

I thought about this too. I'm assuming all the noise they make banging an aluminum metal wall keeps them there? Kinda like a hamster wheel now....no getting off. Just my thoughts..

I assume it's a combination of herd mentality and the ones at the front of the herd being able to smell the people in Alexandria. The slightest distraction will probably draw them away, which is what Rick is hoping for when Daryl/Sasha/Abraham return, but until that distraction comes there is no other potential food source to focus on.

How did Rick get out of situation in RV that wouldn't start and hundreds of walkers coming at him?

But how do they know there is a food source behind those walls though? Outside of like five walkers at the gate and the 10-15 or so that Rick ran through, none of the other ones were alerted to food.

Someone mentioned smelling them...can they do that? I didn't think they could, but maybe so.

Not every walker's noses have fallen off.

Nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd. Herd mentality is going to have them following whatever walker acts like it's got a line on something. It only takes one to smell/see/hear something to have the whole herd on you. I was surprised Rick was giving a speech outside next to the wall about being quiet and inconspicuous

wasn't that the whole reason they covered themselves in walker guts in season one?

The one thing that struck me is that Rick made it a point to emphasize about controlling light and noise. And yet he would just stroll along the top of the wall having a conversation in plain view of the walkers.

That's plausible. Sort of like the quarry pit they all came from, they were drawn there by the noise of the other walkers.

Which makes it hilarious when one sneaks up on someone in the woods.

Which doesn't make sense because they can't breathe. Even if they could how could their smell be good enough to smell the living all the way inside while their fellow dead mask the smell outside?

Yeah, when they were walking through the crowd of walkers.

Not when they were out of sight (and sound) from walkers on the other side of walls.

Maybe they can "sense" food/live flesh. Who knows.

ETA: Although no they can't because there are clearly lots of times when someone is hiding behind a tree or just out of sight from a walker and they never know they are there. So that's out (if there's any consistency).

Good point. Though I guess some of the can "breathe," which is why they make the groaning noise.

I would assume he got out of the RV and ran like hell home. Like you see him doing at the start of the episode.

Speaking of that, I must have forgot, but why did Rick leave Glenn and Michonne and go off by himself in the first place? I can't remember what he said, and I just figured I would see when he got there in the RV, well that never happened.

If they didn't breathe they wouldn't be able to make the sounds they do.

Pretty sure he said he was going to get to the RV and try to head off the herd, then try to drive them away.

I don't feel like this has ever been fully clarified.

In season 2, when Rick and Shane try to let that kid they kidnapped go, they find a school, I think. There were walkers behind a chain link fence. They cut their hands and smear the blood on the fence to attract the walkers, which seems to work. So, they can smell fresh blood, at least.

Which is my point that it doesn't make sense at all how the walkers function. Most of them don't have part of their necks/bodies( no lungs) because they've been damaged. I think they've been a few instances of the bodiless walkers growling. They can also survive under water and often you can hide from them by getting out of their sights. But yet almost all of them make noise despite obviously not being able to breathe.

that and every conversation in the show except 2 was outside, they were stacking bodies next to the wall, and they had the lights on making out

I'm just now caught up. I may be in the minority but I thought the Morgan episode was the best in the last couple of years.

Along those lines, how do they even make noises if they aren't respirating?

ETA: Just saw above posts. It is an interesting question. At the end of the day, it's just a TV show. So it might not be scientifically or physiologically accurate.

If they had dug a nice moat around the town they wouldn't have this problem with walkers at the walls. They could have used that heavy equipment we saw s couple episodes ago.
